Reading the reviews of the Vieux Lyon you know that it's the old town area, and as such is a bit of a tourist trap, but the old town is certainly a "must visit" part of the city.

Les Chandelles is one of many restaurants in the area, the bonus of this place is they offer a 30% discount for the early diners - families with small children, and people like us who had had a very long day (our first day in France, and we had driven from Paris that day and been walking around for approximately 5 hours, so we were ready to eat). We looked at the menu and decided "why not?" At 7pm there is certainly no discount offered in Australia, so we took the offer.

Momo, the maitre d is exceedingly charismatic, speaks enough of several languages to get people in, and waits out the front and directs the staff inside if they seem to be getting off-track in the service department (or at least that's what he was doing when we were there).

We ordered from the fixed menu, which in hindsight, was a mistake. You can't truly appreciate provincial French food from a tourist-trap menu. The error was realised when we lingered over the starter - while the waiter had asked how we would like our steaks cooked (I like mine rare, hubby medium-well), I didn't realise that these would be cooked immediately after the salad was dished out, so when we lingered the steaks were a little, well, let's just say they probably weren't in the condition the chef intended. All things being even and in all fairness though - I've eaten far worse steaks that were (allegedly) cooked 'fresh'.

Dessert was okay, and the wine was perfectly suited to the meal.

We had absolutely no problems with the service. The staff were attentive, courteous, prompt, and while they did not speak English (and my French is poor at best), were knowledgeable enough to recognise our native language and bring the menu in English for us as soon as we sat down.

Overall, I can say that it may not have been the best meal of my life or my trip - but it certainly wasn't the worst by any stretch of the imagination. A little above average to be fair.

The food was good, We did not have to wait long to get our dishes. We were sitting outside and there seemed to be some problem with either waiters or tables. He was serving Wine and the the glass just rolled over, the wine and water from another glass was everywhere and they hand to change the tablecloth and cutlery. It happened with another guests on the table next to us. We were just laughing but it could be annoying for some people.

On the recommendation of a friend we decided to give it a try, despite being located in such a touristic area. service was some waiters a bit smelly. some of the ingredients were not on the
'maxi' salad - in particular the ones we wanted! A good restaurant tells you this and lets you consider changing your order.

We had problems with our accommodation in Lyon which meant that we were very tired and had not really researched where we wanted to eat. We were in a very picturesque area, cobbled streets etc and there were lots of places to eat in the area.
We were invited into the restaurant by a waiter who explained that there were discounts for eating early. We decided to take a punt and were seated outside.
The set menus were okay, we both had French onion soup - tasty but could be hotter and not as good as ours. I went for the fish, which came with rice and a tomato sauce. Was served hot and again, quite tasty. hubby had sausage, potato and red wine sauce. The sausage was very meaty, more like a pate really - again okay, hot and tasty. Only 1 potato served and no veg. We both had ice cream for afters which was very yummy. Bread and water came with meal. We chose a 46cl carafe of red wine and overall we paid 27.7 E. The meal, service and location exceeded our expectations and when we got back to the hotel, we read reviews which said stay away from this area, as it is a tourist trap. Yes, I agree it was very touristy, but we were not trapped and overall had a pleasant experience.
Would not go back but there aren't many places that we would go back to eat.
