First up, this is pretty much the worst place to get to by car. It's easy enough to find, but there is nowhere to stop to unload luggage. It is on a street that you can't drive down and the next street over is one lane and far too busy to stop on. After driving past and realising this, you are then stuck in a crazy maze of one-way streets. It goes without saying that there is no parking provided - the closest free parking is at the top of a very steep hill (not ideal if you've got a bit of luggage).
The apartment we stayed in was on the fourth floor and there is no elevator. The apartment was a little shabby looking, but very clean and adequate enough. Once you climb all of those stairs to get to the apartment, you will find the bedroom up another flight of stairs, but the toilet is located downstairs. Consequently, I would not recommend this place for anyone with any sort of mobility issues.
The bed only had a sheet on it. We stayed in summer, but I would still like a blanket or doona or something. We found something in the cupboard which I presumed to be for this purpose, but it seemed to be made out of curtain material rather than bedding. The pillow (and that is singular - it was one roll thing for the queen bed) was not the best. Minor complaints, but maybe important if you like a comfortable night.
The owner requires a 300 Euro bond and a rental agreement signed, even if you're just staying the night. I haven't ever been asked to do that and I felt a little awkward about it. The owner does seem very honest and genuine, so I can't imagine that you would have any problems (as long as you treat the place with a reasonable amount of respect).
On the positive - you could not find a better location. When you step out of the building you are literally in the best part of town. There is an abundance of great restaurants right on your doorstep and the whole neighbourhood has a really great vibe about it. As a consequence of being up so high, you have some great views. Our apartment had views on all four sides. There was a great view of the church up the hill and Saint-Jean seemed so close you could almost touch it from our window.
I was happy with the place for the night, but I was glad that we weren't staying longer. I thought it a little overpriced compared to other places we stayed.
