Superb museum showing religious and social history through centuries of history.

The old church a been carefully excavated and the display with changing lighting, projections and audio guides is one of the best I have seen.

If you are squeamish about skeletons this may not be for you as there are lots of bones both under walkways and in excavated areas.

Fascinating though.

WOW! Bravo!

This "archeological museum" is somewhat of a misnomer. On a small lead from the Fodor's travel guide, we ventured up the hill expecting to see the "church of Saint Laurent" and a "6th century crypt." What we found was so much more.

When you enter, you are handed a small audio player, which at ~8 different stations, synchronizes with interactive video, lighting, and touch screen displays that describe what you're seeing, in an "augmented reality" format. But enough geek speak!

What we saw were literally 2000 years of pre-Christrian, Christian, and local history. Saint Laurent's crypt was interesting (an empty room) and I guess the original artifact that prompted the excavation/restoration. The more interesting part were the large church (with floor removed and platforms where you could look down into the underground ruins). Even more strange (and the creepy part) were the hundreds of skeletons and skeletal fragments that were unearthed in the tombs and sarcophagi displayed in the mausoleum areas (the site's original purpose). If I recall correctly, they estimated ~1500 bodies to be buried in this site over the hundreds of years.

This is probably not the main highlight in Grenoble if you only have a day or two to spend. However, if you will be here for any period of time, I highly recommend this very memorable site. I've been all around the world and have never seen anything like this--and so up close. Not to mention the whole experience was free!
