“Le San Marco Restaurant - Frankly Not Worth the Price”
Reviewed February 7, 2013

Dined here with 2 others and we all reached the same conclusion that although the quantities were "ski-sized", the quality left something to be desired. Moreover, the cost was rather exaggerated. We did not appreciate that when you order a somewhat dry, pan fried, breaded veal escalope (that was the only item on the plate) priced at 25 Euros, the accompanying simple pasta with an uninspiring tomato sauce would be ridiculously charged an extra at 12 Euros making the total dish 37 Euros !!! This sort of policy indicates the philosophy of the patrons, namely gouge the clients.
The service was very good, but the lighting was too dark, to the extent that we had to use the light of our mobile phone to read the menu and the wine card.
Our finding is that this place is "tourist trap" and future visitors should bear in mind the phrase "buyer beware".
Sadly, we cannot recommend this restaurant.

My wife and I visited San Marco on our first night in beautiful Courchevel 1850. The restaurant is located in an attractive location (where is not attractive in Courchevel!?) just round the corner from the our hotel (le pomme de pin) and so on our way home after a few drinks in the town we chose to San Marco for a meal.

This large restaurant is attractive and well presented throughout. The staff were very polite and impeccably presented. All looked good....

The menu was slightly unusual. We eat quite regularly at good Italian restaurants but I can't remember encountering a menu that was made up of antipasti and then first and second 'mains' (maybe I'm wholly uncultured!). This is a all fine our course if it wasn't for the fact that each 'course' is at least 20 euros and really most were 30+ euros. I can assure you that they're all small and each should be considered part of a two course meal at the bare minimum. My wife and elected to skip the antipasti and have a first and second main.

Both of our first mains used nice fresh ingredients; tomatoes and mozzarella and carpaccio of beef. What was lacking was any imagination whatsoever beyond those key ingredients. My carpaccio with rocket was exactly just that; no dressing, no accompaniments just the beef and the rocket. For 29 euros (for the carpaccio) this simplicity might be pushing it just a little too far. The mains, although again using the same nice fresh ingredients (volgole linguine and courgette penne) but so simple and bland and nothing at all to remember.

Including two glasses of wine we paid 150 euros for one of the most forgettable Italian meals I have even forgotten. There are some great places in Courchevel (as we have discovered on our short stay here) but this is one most certainly out to catch the tourists.

We stayed at Le Saint Joseph in February 2007.

It is a lovely hotel in a great location in terms of access to the piste but I wouldn't stay there again. If you choose to stay at Le Saint Joseph, avoid room 103.

Room 103 is very nice but it was ridiculously hot. As a result, we wanted to leave the window open but 103 is a ground floor room and, in any case, the hotel is very close to a nightclub so we had to keep the window closed.

All the staff were absolutely superb (friendly, helpful, genuinely charming) except for the manager. We were getting very little sleep in our room but the manager wouldn't move us and she refused to allow us to move to another hotel within the same hotel group.

When you're paying £1,650 to stay one week in a hotel, you have a right to expect perfection but I'm afraid we just felt let down.

  • Liked — Proximity to the piste
  • Disliked — The noise, the heat, and the manager

This is a lovely hotel in a great location in the centre of 1850, 1 min walk from the lifts. The rooms are lovely - big for a ski resort, and beautifully furnished. The food is the best in Courchevel in my view. The bar is also wonderful. This would have got 5* had it not been for the snooty restaurant staff (particularly in the Grand Cafe Asian restaurant) and the very poor sound proofing which meant we had disco music till 4am every night.
