“Fabulous Esprit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

Got back from the Chalet Hotel Crystal 2000 yesterday and will be rebooking for next year today. 4th- time with Esprit and although I don't disagree with some of the criticisms about the accommodation that is NOT what makes the Esprit experience so sensational. Our kids are their VIPs and if they are having a great holiday in capable and very fun hands what more do you need? Glad that Esprit do listen to criticisms and act on it - all our beds had fantastic mattresses and new duvets and pillows - we have never slept so well! Location amazing - three steps to the slopes and you're off. Special thanks go to Bea and Shona who looked after my daughter and I every morning when we were the first to arrive for breakfast and they were still setting up. Also great team behind the bar - Mat and Harry - couldn't do enough to help and can even advise on the best slopes to take the kids. Sorry if I have missed anyone else out - the whole team were brilliant. We may see some of you next year when we return.
Finally if you are booking this holiday for luxury 5 star accommodation then don't. But if you have children and want the BEST SKI holiday EVER - you had better get booking very soon!
Thanks to Esprit
The Hill family

We have just returned from our 2nd esprit holiday.

We are a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 children (3 and 6).

The crystal hotel is situated right on the slopes with true ski to door. My 6 year old (improvers) skied off across the mountain each morning whilst we watched from our balcony, whilst my 3 year old enjoyed his lessons (spritelets) in the afternoons. The 3 valley area is vast and I would challenge even the best of skiers to cover the whole area in a week. The snow and weather was amazing. We used Drew the ski host for the 1st couple of days who knew the mountains very well.

The hotel itself is average but if you are on holiday with kids and want to feel comfortable without worrying it is ideal. The even number rooms overlook the slopes with amazing views.

The childcare is amazing, all the staff were fab! My 2 really enjoyed ski lessons and snow club and could be looked after from 8.30 till 6.00 if required. My 2 were so tired we never made use of the coco club activities but the baby listening service enabled us to enjoy adult only dining.

Matt and Harry were great on the bar and kept all the adults entertained. Watch out they like Jaegermeister!!!! Ha

The area generally is quite expensive but you only need to really buy lunches - the hotel provide packed lunches for around 7 euros each if you really were on a budget and you just need to check the menus on the slopes before you go in.

We would definitely return to the crystal again because of location and the amazing staff.

We are just looking at booking our next esprit holiday for next year - last year we went to val de sere with esprit and it was pretty much the same timetable with childcare!

The summer brochure is now available I believe!!

We booked the hotel knowing it was not going to be 5 star and it was a little rough around the edges however as a family holiday it was our best yet, the Esprit staff were fantastic, brilliant with the kids, I have never felt so relaxed to leave my children knowing they were having a great time. My 3 year old even decided to ski every afternoon which we had not originally booked however the esprit staff and esf were so good with him he loved it every day.
Last year at Chalet Corniche in Tignes, Esprit were rubbish, this year with the 59 staff they were amazing! what a difference with good management and staff in place it can make. Also thank you to Matt the barman for looking after the adults in the evening and the chef who cooked all the meals, food was very good all week.
We used the hotel ski hire for the 3 year old, which was fine however, we had booked ski higher for our older son who came to the chalet the first night, either way seems to work, however if you are after top end skis for adults which we were not you may be better with ski higher or looking in town, don’t think you had much choice at the hotel.
Hotel is not 5 star inside, however the holiday offered at this hotel was 5 star, the position on the slopes of the hotel was brilliant and we simply loved the location and ease of ski to door.

First week of the season and we expected a few teething problems but the hotel and the staff were fantastic. The location of the hotel is perfect situated right on the side of the slopes and has an on site ski rental shop. The childrens club provided us with much valued adult time, the child care staff took care of everything. Children's meal time ran unbelievably smoothly and the quality of the evening meal was of an excellent standard. The hotel is situated slightly away from the main resort but there is a complimentary shuttle bus that runs every evening.

Excellent value as first week of the season, had a great holiday and will definitely be looking to book again for next year

I would go along with other reviews regarding the hotel that it is in need of some refurbishment but it meant that you weren't worried if your child spilt something on the floor.

Esprit were excellent with the kids, I just can't put into words how relaxed we were knowing that our girls were safe with the staff. Our 2 year old was in nursery and at the presentation evening we were given all her painting and drawing she had done during the week. Our other daughter who is 5 went into sprites ski classes and had a brilliant time. They play games whilst waiting for the ski school to come and collect them which included running about in ski boots which I think they do as warm up exercises.

We stayed in interconnecting rooms (304 & 306) and they were quite spacious. Each room was a triple and you could also connect to next doors wi-fi (hotel annapurna).

We and other guests were impressed with all the food that was served to us and we also had a pretty good choice of wine.

All in all we had an excellent time, the staff were superb, the snow for 15-22nd April was out of this world as it snowed everyday we were there. To prove a point we have now booked up to go back there next march, fingers crossed it's as good as this year!!

This is my second ski vacation with family.

Warning. If you have no children and want luxury DO NOT come here.

If you want a family holiday this is the place to come. Esprit are great. From our oreviouse esxperiences with our family holidays we find that not many staff meet your expectations, however the staff at this place go beyond their duties. All the staff were great but special shout for the following, Jo (head of childcare) went beyond and Dropped off our daughter and picked her up from ski classes allowing us whole day of skiing. The ski hosting was great, Annalisa and Louise G took the guests on great days out. Jessica managed guests itineraries well, While Sam entertained the adults at the bar. Big shout for Louise P the super manager who rolled up her sleeves throughout!

My daughter LOVED it. And for those that have children, I am sure you will know how important it is that the kids are happy!

Only fault is they got the dinner wrong for a sitting so a diner only had cheese and biscuits for dinner. But I believe it was a genuine mistake.

Summary: perfect for a good family ski holiday!

We have now spent four holidays with Esprit at this hotel and are booked to go again in 2013.

Yes the hotel is a little dated and it could do with a face lift, but it seems that Esprit are spending the money on great staff rather than investing in what is likely to be a short term lease before the hotel is ripped down to be replaced with yet another five star property.

Why do we keep going back? Location is second to none, the rooms are spacious and very adequate for a ski holiday, the hotel has great facilities, the bar area is very pleasant and relaxing, the food is very good and breakfast was great, it is very reasonably priced for the most expensive resort in Europe, but more than all of those put together the staff are great.

We were lucky enough to be in resort on the first week of the season and although there were teething problems these were to be expected of 60 new people working together many of who have not worked in the hotel industry, but what do you expect? If you want a Somelier at diner, there are many places in Courchevel that offer this service.

When we returned in March the place was running like a well oiled machine and every single member of staff was great. Just to mention a few names, Ben the head chef produced great food every night and Jo the child care manager was amazing. She spoke to every family individually on day 1 to make sure childcare arrangements were correct and again on day 2 to check we were happy with how the first day had gone. Happy children make happy parents and she totally understood that.

All in all. In this life you get what you pay for and in Courchevel 1850 the Crystal is
the best value hotel available.
