“4th trip to the Crystal. Booked in already for 2013”
Reviewed April 11, 2012

We have now spent four holidays with Esprit at this hotel and are booked to go again in 2013.

Yes the hotel is a little dated and it could do with a face lift, but it seems that Esprit are spending the money on great staff rather than investing in what is likely to be a short term lease before the hotel is ripped down to be replaced with yet another five star property.

Why do we keep going back? Location is second to none, the rooms are spacious and very adequate for a ski holiday, the hotel has great facilities, the bar area is very pleasant and relaxing, the food is very good and breakfast was great, it is very reasonably priced for the most expensive resort in Europe, but more than all of those put together the staff are great.

We were lucky enough to be in resort on the first week of the season and although there were teething problems these were to be expected of 60 new people working together many of who have not worked in the hotel industry, but what do you expect? If you want a Somelier at diner, there are many places in Courchevel that offer this service.

When we returned in March the place was running like a well oiled machine and every single member of staff was great. Just to mention a few names, Ben the head chef produced great food every night and Jo the child care manager was amazing. She spoke to every family individually on day 1 to make sure childcare arrangements were correct and again on day 2 to check we were happy with how the first day had gone. Happy children make happy parents and she totally understood that.

All in all. In this life you get what you pay for and in Courchevel 1850 the Crystal is
the best value hotel available.

We stayed at Esprit's Chalet Hotel Crystal 2000 between 5 and 12 Feb 2012.

Most of the 2012 reviews hit the nail on the head - the hotel is in a good ski in/ski out location but the management was below par. We previously stayed in Ski Total's chalet hotel Cascades in Courchevel 1650 (same company as Esprit) and it was no different - run by young inexperienced staff who lacked the ability to get the basics right.

The good points:
- Hotel was in a good location next to the pistes, as long as you're not fussed about going into 1850. Great views in all directions.
- The pool, sauna and jacuzzi are nice extras, as long as they are working.
- Evening meals excellent quality and cakes at afternoon tea also good.
- Nursery staff very friendly and capable.
- Evening baby/child listening service really useful.
- Staff on the whole friendly and good fun.
- Cleanliness of bedrooms/public areas good.

The bad points:
- Lack of proper management generally, and especially at meal times.
- Hotel miles out of town.
- Jacuzzi freezing cold for two days (cleaning apparently).
- Bedroom windows kept freezing shut.
- Bedrooms/bathrooms basic but very dated and in need of a refurb.
- Lack of seating and lighting in bar/lounge area.
- Sorting out a meal during Chalet staff night off was a complete shambles.
- Lack of communications by hotel staff about certain events.
- Silly rules.
- Breakfast also a shambles - never enough mugs, tables never laid properly, re-stocking of buffet very slow, porridge disgusting.
- Many of the childrens toys in the nursery were missing batteries.
- The location means it's difficult to take advantage of much cheaper ski hire from usual branded local stores.
- Pillows/beds quite uncomfortable.
- Bedroom got really hot at night.

For the price we paid for a family of three, we would have expected much more given Esprit's reputation as the No.1 family specialist. If they could only get the basics right, it would have made a big difference - i.e. the difference between going back or not.

This was our 2nd Esprit holiday this year (went to Belle Plagne at New Year), but never been to this hotel before. Travelled with my 2 daughters (7 & 8) and friends we met skiing last year with their daughters (6 & 10).

The hotel is in a truly great location being right on the slopes in Courchevel 1850, but you are a bit isolated if you want to walk to shops or restaurants.

You should ignore the comments on the state of the hotel - it is graded as a three star hotel, and given it has an indoor pool, what more can you want?

The kids all had a brilliant time as ever, and the only negative was that one of our party got an injury on the third day which was a huge shame.

The food was really very good, and the atmosphere was really good - a nice size of hotel to get to know people.

All in all, would highly recommend this hotel and Esprit.

I stayed here in February. The staff were friendly and helpful and childcare up to the usual excellent Esprit standards, Easy ski into the resort although you do have to take a short button lift to ski down an it can be busy if you don't time it right.

Food was great as well.

My only complaint was that the hotel was a little shabby e.g. carpets quite dirty and curtains hanging off the rails. As you don't spend much time in your room thus was bearable.

Hi have mixed feelings about ESF. I was in level 1 classes - starting to ski blues. Our instructor took us on a red on the third day which I was no where near ready to do and frankly out of my depth. I swapped classes after that and although |I ended up in a French speaking class I was much happier with the instructor.

Also hire skis from in town - the in hotel ski shops equipment is not great.

Overall a great holiday and I have another trip booked with Esprit next week,

After just coming back from a Esprit Holiday - All i can say is that all the staff are amazing and work damned hard & they obviusly go out at night which who can blame them but we didnt hear any noise and none of the staff appear drunk/hungover the next morning they are always clean and well presented!- so the carpets have a few stains but at the end of the day wouldnt yours if you had people coming in and out all the time and children running around - this isnt esprit's fault
all the satff work really hard - the hotel assitants work really hard getting breakfast out and then cleaning all the rooms to a high standard every day & then serving adult tea!
The childcare Staff are absolutely amazing - i think i love the songs more than the children - all the childcare staff work really hard taking the children out each day - and lets be honest getting that many children ready to go outside and keeping your eyes on them cannot be easy - I Think Jo Lees & Pamela Stevens Deserve a special mention as they are absolutely fantastic and are a credit to Esprit - Well Done Guys i Will certainly be returning and hopefully see a few familiar faces!!!

Just returned from a fantastic holiday with our family - our first ever skiing holiday - what a surprise experience, read all the reviews and was a little concerned before we arrived?!? Amazing child care for our precious grandchildren, excellent food and bar service - nothing was too much trouble for any member of staff. The decor, fixtures and fittings are adequate - the staff cannot change these things!! A hotel half filled with children needs to be
a place where parents and, if you are lucky enough to be invited, grandparents, can feel relaxed and at the same time have some quality adult time whilst the children are well cared for - this hotel provided this and more, thank you .

Stayed I think the same week as the previous reviewer ( Picko 135 ) and agree wholeheartedly with their comments. The location of this chalet hotel is perfect - true ski in ski out and so much time and effort saved by being able to pop your skis on outside the bootroom and you're already on the piste. An easy ski down to an easy button lift so accessible to all. Fantastic views from all rooms I think and lovely to be able to sit out on the terrace soaking up the sun ! Courchevel 1850 provides access to an extensive ski area however it was always possible to pop back quite quickly to collect kids after lunch. Child care was pure Esprit - seamless from morning ski lessons to supervised lunch, snow club and high tea. My daughter ( 6 ) was thrilled to find 2 snow rangers from the Belle Plagne holiday last year and it was a lovely surprise to meet up with families we had met last year too. Our room was fine - clean with comfortable beds, plenty of hot water and lots of storage. The fridge was also handy too. OK the carpets had a few marks and the paint was a bit flaky around the windows but who cares ? Bar area and restaurant seemed to work well. Food was excellent. Only used the pool a couple of times - not huge but more than adequate for the kids and probably more essential if the weather hadn't been so good.

Only a couple of minor niggles - tea and coffee always available but unfortunately the coffee was lukewarm and not great ( cups weren't always clean either ). Also a bit dismayed to find that because I had not booked ski hire with original booking we did not qualify for the free child skis which made in house service very expensive. Used Ski Higher in 1850 who provided a shuttle service and saved us £90 !

I can only assume that some of the earlier critical reviews were due to early season teething troubles which seems to be common in most resorts and certainly seemed to have been sorted. The Crystal well exceeded our expectations and provided an affortable stay in Courchevel 1850 which is staggeringly expensive. All in all the best ski holiday I have been on and yes we have already booked for next year !

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony - views are great ( valley and piste side )
