“A Skiing Paradise”
Reviewed January 4, 2013

Our family of four (including 2 'tweens) spent a 10 day holiday at Courchevel 1850 in March 2012. We had done some due diligence, but coming from North America we were not entirely sure what to expect. It turned out to be the most spectacular vacation we have ever experienced, and we are frequent travelers. The mountain scenery was breathtaking, the skiing was varied and offered some wonderful groomed intermediate runs for my wife and I, as well as some more challenging and "off-piste" powder for our children..... yes, sadly, we are at the point where the children have somewhat surpassed my wife and my ski abilities! We split the days between having the kids in ski lessons - which were done with a former member of the French national ski team - and skiing together as a family. The selection of restaurants was simply astounding, and we ended up having our best meals on the hill itself. You could easel spend two weeks there and have a quasi-gourmet meal at a different restaurant on the hill every day! We were there in March and had perfect weather: cold nights which made for firm, groomed morning skiing, then gradually warming up to about 12 celsius (mid 50's for our American friends) by early afternoon - perfect spring skiing. Frankly, we felt as though we were getting the best of both worlds: a nice ski holiday combined with some relaxing mid and late day drinks on various patios in glorious sunshine. At nights we were so tired from skiing that we generally watched a video in our rented apartment with the kids and went to bed fairly early for an early start the next day on freshly groomed slopes. A few nights we chose to venture outdoors: twice to nice restaurants and once to take in a spectacular fireworks show against the mountain backdrop. If I was going to be picky I would suggest this might not be the best spot for younger children - say under 7 years of age - but the adjoining valley of Mirabel (that we skied to several times) would be perfect for this. In addition, this is not an inexpensive holiday. But for an incredible ski holiday that combines great food, great skiing, spectacular weather (at least in early spring), and wonderful European alpine ambience, we found it to be worth every penny. With any luck, we will have a repeat of this particular "bucket-list" worthy holiday.

“Food lovers and non skiers will also love it”

The ski area is excellent. There are plenty of ski instructors and extra activities to do. The choice of restaurants is excellent, but book in advance.
