Owner description: ENJOY THE MOUNTAINS ! With its southern exposure, overlooking the Mont-Blanc Range, the Brévent is the ideal departure point for classic hikings and easy rambles to various mountain lakes (Lac du Brévent, Lac Cornu…)

Tuesday afternoon in brilliant sunshine we took the Brevant cable car, which in itself is not a very long journey (but you need to go up a gondola from Chamonix to Planpratz first), to the summit of Brevant. to take in some superlative views of the Mont Blanc massif across the valley followed by a walk along part of the Tour de Mont Blanc route. Wednesday afternoon and we had been elsewhere that morning but decided to have one last trip up Le Brevant. The cloud surrounded the cable car and rain was in the air. You could not see a thing! I did feel sorry for the party of Japanese tourists who were probably in Chamonix for that one day only.

The Brevant cable car is quite a different experience from the ride up to the Auiguille du Midi, and if you don't have enough time in Chamonix to do both, perhaps you are better off doing just the latter. However, if you do have the time, the Brevant ride is a good complement. As it is on the other side of Chamonix, you get a spectacular panoramic view of both Mont Blanc and Auiguille du Midi. The ride is in two sections: the first cable car takes you up to Plan Praz, where the the paragliders jump off from. Then there is the second telecabine which takes you to the summit of the Brevant. The Brevant side has more space (and more dining options) than the Auiguille du Midi. It makes for a nice day out for picnic. Walking down, rather than taking the able car again, is also a more fun option. The prices appear to have been raised again this summer: the ride to the very top is now about EUR 23.

Spectacular view from Plan Praz after a very easy cable car ride from the centre of Chamonix. The view was breathtaking, there was even some snow/ice for the kids to play with in July. There is also plenty of space at Plan Praz to walk around and see different aspects of the amazing view. It was also interesting to watch the paragliders launch themselves from this spot. I would recommend a trip on the Le Brevant Cable car and definitely take the time to look around Plan Praz on the way up.

We had purchased 6 day lift passes when we were in Chamonix which, as we were on a mainly walking holiday, was the most cost effective way for us to use the lift system. The walks down to La Praz from the top of Le Brevent were very enjoyable, not difficult and with great 360 deg views.

Not a cheap outing by any means, the lift to Le Brevent is exciting and beautiful. My husband and I had already gone up to the Aiguille du Midi, so we were reluctant to spend even more to go up Le Brevent. I'm glad that we did not skip the trip!

Like Aiguille du Midi, the way up requires two different cars, the first being a smaller lift (it was early, so we had the lift car to ourselves, though the capacity was probably six persons) and the second a large cable-car which had a capacity of roughly 30 people.

As Le Brevent is not as high as Aiguille du Midi, such warm clothing is not always necessary in the summer, but it's always a good idea to have some protective clothing in case the weather takes a sudden turn. Sturdy (and waterproof) hikers are needed as even in July the trail was covered in many places by rather deep snow. The views from the top were incredibly beautiful, looking across the valley to the Mont Blanc Massif and then behind us to the other peaks and valleys in the area. Several groups of rock climbers made for interesting watching also.

We chose to take the trail from Le Brevent down to the midpoint, Planpraz, where we caught the lift back to Chamonix. The trail was steep and snow-covered, making me wish I had brought hiking poles. At Planpraz, we bought sandwiches and ate at the outdoor picnic tables (with umbrellas for the sun)--no pique-nique! In other words, if you bring your own food, you'll have to find somewhere else to sit.

At Planpraz, you can opt to paraglide down to the valley floor. We just sat for a bit and watched people taking off the steep slope and soaring on the currents. Pretty fascinating! Some people take the Flegere lift up, hike across to Planpraz and head down on the lift...or hike up to Le Brevent! That would be a long day, however...
