Lots of original patina, friendly staff, all round a positive experience, although the maitre d' at breakfast was a bit testy when we told him where we would like to sit instead of sitting where he wanted us to sit.

Thin walls, noisy pipes but the price was right and the location is right in the middle of town. Would I stay again? Probably.

I have just come back from a weekend skiing in Chamonix.
I have never written a review before but feel compelled to warn people about this hotel.
Yes the hotel is in need of modernisation badly.
Do not stay here if you expect to get more than 4 hours sleep a night. The thin walls enable you to hear everyone come in of the evening from 10pm through til 3am. The walls must be made of paper mache as for 2 nights we heard the man in the next room on the phone to his wife "Susan" at 2.30 in the morning.Plus there was the bonus of being opposite "The Pub" which has merry revellery til the early hours.
There was no bath in the room, just an antique shower that provided cold (not even tepid) water after a long day's skiing. Not ideal for soothing aching limbs after a long day on the slopes.
The staff were friendly considering they were french & dislike the english. However, this did not make up for the sleep deprivation or cold showers.

Great value for money, excellent facilities; large, spacious rooms, if a little dated. However, the breakfasts are excellent; and for families at 130 euro per night including breakfast, is the best value in the alps. Don't expect a five star hotel, but the staff are helpful and there's free parking. We are going back this week! Also, the hotel is very central

We've just come back from a weekend in Chamonix staying at the excellent Richemond Hotel. As mentioned in other reports, yes it is a little lacking in modern decor, but that only adds to the rustic, gallic charm.

The staff are so friendly and helpful, that it comes almost as a shock after years of surly French service on numerous ski-ing holidays - nothing is too much trouble for them, and all guests are treated with the same joie de vivre.

The rooms are large and have buckets of space for all your ski-ing / hiking clobber. And most importantly of all, a large bath with a hot water supply that doesn't run out after three other guests have availed themselves ! Our bath had a shower attachment, but no curtain - a minor quibble for most people, but for a water baby like me, it generally meant a soaking wet bathroom floor - much to my wife's continued annoyance. The only thing that the hotel might be lacking is a decent bar area, but as my Missus pointed out, there are plenty of bars available in town, and it would only make the hotel noisier. Very generous brandy measures from the friendly night watchman though :-)

Breakfasts are a little disappointing, but I don't know of many people who go on holiday for a breakfast.... What there is, is more than adequate to see you through to your (generally overpriced) mountain lunch.

The ski room is useful and nice to be able to lock your ski's up too. Being only two minutes from the ski bus stop, made it a highly convenient location for getting to all the various ski areas, but the buses are a little cramped as ski's have to be taken on board with you as there are no carrying slots on the outside.

I know this isn't strictly about the hotel, but just a few words about Chamonix. If youy're staying in the town itself, then the ski bus, however convenient, is still a bus journey, and therefore takes up time that has to be factored into your day. An hour and a half round trip to Le Tour is a sizeable chunk and all the ski areas are spread throughout the valley with little, if any, linkage. The town itself lacks any real charm, but is full of all the necessary amenities and some very nice restaurants within striking distance of the hotel. Steer clear of the house reds - I had a Cotes du Rhone straight out of the fridge (!) and wifey's white felt like it had spent too long next to the 'hot stone' So much for the French passion for wine......

To sum up, the hotel is a wonderful charismatic building, 'faded glories' springs to mind, but to do it up would probably not make any financial sense, and, worse, it would probably just become another anonymous, antiseptic chain. Sadly, we were less impressed with Chamonix as a whole, and even though it has been a very bad year for snow so far, the ski areas were too small and too disjointed for our liking. Couldn't help feeling that it was more about a fashionable place to be, rather than a great place to ski.
But if we were to return, then the Richemond would be top of the list.

I have been visiting Chamonix for 20 years and have worked there for a season- and never sampled the Richemond! I have now and am glad I did! If you are used to French hotels (slightly quirky but usually excellent) then you cannot go wrong here!

We had a double room on the fourth floor- and although the walls are a little thin (makes things interesting) the room was very typically french and we loved it- included was a spectacular view over Mont Blanc. The shower was the best bit of the room- a sort or cabin thing with water pressure that could soothe any sore muscles after sking. The breakfast was also excellent- and the chap who runs it was a great character- just dont sit on a table for 3 if there are two of you!

The faciliites were great with a games room and non smoking lounge, and plenty of parking for the car as well- which is great as parking in Chamonix will send anyone round the bend! The staff could not be more helpful, and the location was excellent- basically right on the main strip- if you want to join fellow Brits it is right opposite 'The Pub' but my advice is to venture further afield.

If you are looking for American style chain hotels were they pander to your every need- don't stay here, but if you want the real deal for France then this hotel is up there with the best.

I will certainly be going back!

My friend and I have just returned from a Christmas skiing holiday in Chamonix where we spent 7 nights at the Hotel Richemond which we found to be absolutely fabulous!

The staff were extremely friendly, accommodating and spoke English extremely well. They were available to assist all the guests 24 hours a day (including the night doorman who still managed to smile when we stumbled in at 3 or 4 in the morning!).

The hotel itself is perfectly located in the centre of town, just across the road from a number of restaurants, shops, great bars and clubs and just about every other amenity you could need (mini super, internet, public phones, pharmacy). One of the biggest advantages of its location was that it was a 2 minute walk out the back door to the bus stop where all the buses stopped for all the ski stops in the Chamonix-Mount Blanc Valley (inc Les Houches, Les Bossons, Le Tour). We never had to walk for more than 10 minutes to find exactly what we were after (in Chamonix centre or in Chamonix Sud). Our friends we in other hotels across Chamonix and they all agreed that the Richemond had the best location by far.

The hotel had very good sized rooms - we had a twin room which had 2 king single beds, a huge cupboard with hanging space and shelves and enough room for our 2 oversized suitcases. The bathroom (bath only, no shower) was also very spacious and clean. Our room was a standard room but still had an amazing view out to the back of the building overlooking Mount Blanc.

The hotel also provided a decent breakfast buffet, had a ski and board storage room, central heating throughout and an elevator. The only disappointment for us was that the hotel didn't have a spa, jacuzzi or sauna which would've been nice after a long day of skiing, but then again - you can't have it all!

When we booked this hotel, many websites had said it was only a 2 star hotel, but we would say that it rates as a 3 star for its amenities, 4 star for the friendliness of the staff and 5 star for its location in Chamonix.

When we return to Chamonix we will definitely stay at the Hotel Richemond again!
