“Good Hotel, Good Atmosphere”
Reviewed January 16, 2007

This hotel occupies a great location in Chamonix - close to the ski bus stops, restaurants, bars, shops etc.

The reception area and restaurant are great - leather chairs, candles, wi-fi throughout. The bedrooms are a little small, but this is not unusual for Europe (and you don't go to Chamonix to spend time in your room!!)

There's a great bar in the hotel, separated by a huge door from the reception area. Yes, it is loud between 5pm and 7pm (prime apres-ski time) when a band plays, but after that, it's quite quiet. The atmosphere is brilliant - very friendly and welcoming, bar prices not too expensive.

The hotel is probably aimed at a younger market, but don't let this put you off - my 55 year old Dad loved it!!

Stayed at the Gustavia as part of a self-guided group walking the Tour of Mont Blanc recently, so our accommodation was booked by the tour company. We were allocated Room 101 which on arrival seemed excellent - large, and with a well equipped bathroom. However we later discovered we were above the bar which is open till 1am, so we were kept awake until closing time by loud music and thumping bass, people on tables outside below our window talking loudly, followed by the noise of staff bringing all the furniture back indoors and closing up. The windows were quite old fashioned and didn't close too well so we couldn't shut out the noise.

I asked for a change of room and we were given one at the back, much smaller, with a rather uncomfortable bed (it appeared to be a divan base only without the mattress), but at least it was quiet. I found the receptionist very condescending and unhelpful. 2 other couples asked for a change of room that night due to noise, including one from our group who moved rooms at midnight! We also met some other English people on package tours who were dissatisfied with the standard of rooms and the loud bar (which has a happy hour 8-10, and serves food till 10:30, so is busy till the early hours, with the occasional disco). They considered it wasn't up to a 3 star standard, and several of their group had already asked for changes of room. Our organisers told us that the rooms on the 4th floor have velux windows which don't open much and there were complaints that the rooms were far too hot in warm weather, and that there were regular complaints about old and uncomfortable beds. Breakfast was fine, we didn't have dinner but the people on half board told us it was rather repetitive and Scandinavian orientated as the hotel is Swedish owned. It's a good location next to the train station but there is quite a lot of traffic noise - street cleaners, delivery lorries, buses etc which start up early in the morning (6am!). If returning to Chamonix we would look for somewhere in a quieter and more pedestrianised part of town, and certainly wouldn't recommend this place. I felt for the package tour people who had booked half board for 2 weeks expecting better and weren't at all happy. Fortunately we only had 2 nights. Our tour company is I understand actively trying to find a better Chamonix hotel for its group bookings.

stayed at Gustavia for short break (end of ski season)from 19th to 23rd april 2006.
Great hotel-perfect situation opposite rail station with parking on site.
Reception staff were most helpful and the room was clean, warm and comfortable,
breakfast buffet was served in a beautiful dining room and well stocked and checked by the person on duty. Fantastic lively bar for apres-ski or retire to your own private balcony with a night-cap !!

Old Hotel run by Swedish Students. Central heating doesn't work and no hot water between 4pm and 8pm. Front desk staff not interested as it is always like this.

Don't take room 209 as it has damp and fungus from ceiling to floor in one corner. Being a corner room with 2 windows it was freezing and staff diod not have any heaters. We had to tape the hair dryer switch down to get the chill off the room.

We were moved to 409 on the top floor which was also freezing but there was an oil heater in the room which broke the ice.

Food basic 3 courses.
