“Perfect location, awful treatment”

I realize that alpine refuge is not a hotel and will not complain about high prices or lack of water in the toilet. We could sleep well before the summit push, thanks to a dozen of our roommates for being quiet enough. But leaving some belongings on our beds was a mistake. By the time we came back (around 10:30 AM) the room was completely empty. Some stuff we could later find in the anteroom scattered on and under the shelves, some we never did. I got back my cap, which is several months old and in no way looks like rag, only because it accidentally fell out of janitor's trash bag. We were not warned of early check-out hour, and regardless of is it really in the rules or not, the staff could show a little bit of respect to other people's possessions. Treating it like that is not much better than stealing.

We stayed here after a night at the Tete Rousse and a crossing of the very dangerous Gran Coulier. Both these experiences were miles better than the atmosphere and staff the Gouter hut. Who the hell do the staff in this place think they are? The female in charge was rude and extremely unhelpful and actually shrugged her shoulders when we raised concerns over our booking. The place is morbid and claustrophobic and you can smell the toilets from 20 metres away. The hygiene in the place leaves a lot to desired. Even after being exhausted from our successful summit we decided we would rather descend than stay at this hell hole again to rest. Never again and if it is the same staff in the new hut then I will not stay there either. My advice would be to train and prepare a bit harder and to summit from Tete Rousse and bypass these morons altogether.

The place is old and crowded in high season fare enough. Having to sleep on the dining room floor with 50 other people and woken at 1:00 am fare enough. Toilets stink and are filthy fare enough. Food expensive and untasty fare enough. But the staff here are the worst ive ever experienced anywhere. They have a difficult job in a tuff environment but prisoners would be treated better. They will ignore you and not talk to you when you ask for something. They will throw peoples equipment down the stairs and laugh like its a great joke to each other. Treat you as if your stupid. Make alot of noise while people are trying to sleep. Insult people behind there backs and on and on. In the end i went without water as i couldnt go back into the place. Made it down to tette rousse where they are a world of difference. Lets hope when the new gouter hut opens they change the staff.

Probably the most unhelpful, least hospitable and uncomfortable place I have ever been. Stay at Tete Rousse, you will not regret it. The new hut is due to be finished in a week but as the same people are managing the new place I do not expect it to be any better.

Room Tip: Avoid. Stay at Tete Rousse and wake up early instead.

We started our Mont Blanc climb from the Cosmique hut and descended via Du Gouter route.
We decided to stay at the Du Gouter hut because it was still a long way to the Chamonix valley ahead.
They charged us 53 euro per person for the half-board and said they can tell us the bed numbers after dinner. After dinner they said they have no free spaces and we'll have to sleep in the dining room. There were one lady and several guys who worked in this refuge. ALL OF THEM were very unfriendly and behaved themselves like the nazis.
- they made no discount, we had to pay full amount for sleeping on the tables in the dining room
- they gave us no mats, pillows and covers
- they were very loud during we were trying to sleep. As we asked them to be more quiet they said that we can sleep outside if we don't like something.
- they woke up us at 2 a.m. because they had first breakfast at that time

The toilets are terrible, in same room for men and women. No place to wash hands.

They are trying to make people to leave their gear in the entrance hall. But this room is small, dark, overfilled with boots, cramponces, poles and it is not difficult to lose your equipment among the others'. So, everybody is trying to take their belongings to the bedroom. As the staff finds somebody's ice-screws, crampons, ice-axe, etc. in the bedroom they just throw it to corridor.

Never, never stay in this terrible place! The Cosmigue refuge is much cleaner, comfortable and the stuff is very friendly.
