The location is actually worth the trip with the little train that takes you from the town of Chamonix ,at 1917 meters of altitude ,right on top of La Vallee' Blanche ,the superb glacier where you actually can also ski .
The " Ancient refuge " has been perfectly refurbished ,it's warm ,rustic ,cosy and has a lot of character .
The menu is very " mountain food " , deer terrine or wild boar stew , lots of melted cheeses served with cold cuts from the area , this is the rustic food from Savoie ...Quite heavy but tasty.
Our fois gras terrine was very good served with a fig compote and very good bread .The snails ,unfortunately needed more flavour ,no salt ,garlic cut in pieces too big and dry sauce ...what a pity ...If you order " cafe' gourmand " be aware that you won't get a coffee with your small selection of desserts ... Apparently you have to order it on the side and pay another 3 euros .Where is the coffee then ? Just call it " tiny selection of desserts " but the nice waiter said : sorry business is business .I would add : people are not stupid ,as we might go back but won't order it again .
Good young service and the view from the closed veranda pays it all .
