Owner description: ENJOY THE GLACIERS ! Two altitudes with two environments: the Lognan pastures at 1 970 m and the Argentière glacier’s seracs at the 3 275 m summit. A whole universe to discover…

We decided to go to the grand Montets because of the higher altitude, in hopes of good snow conditions. We were not disappointed. We ended up coming here two days and had so much fun. We were able to find good snow on the black runs. Visitors should know that they need to make a reservation for the 2nd gondola, you can't just queue up. We would definitely ski here again.

If there is any powder this is the place to go. Mind the walk down the staircase at the top.
Off piste (be careful) is jsut fantastic. The queue for the lift is annoying though

The mountain offers a lot of off pist areas. It is an adventure for the family to go all the way up and ski next to the glacier. The kids (11,15) love the fun park and going down the ravines. The restaurant, somewhat big, Plan Joran has good food and on sunny days it is lovely to sit on the terrasse.

When I first looked at it in Trip Advisor, I found it is in Rank 10 and thus put in on the back bench.
On our second day at Chamonix, after seeing Mer De Glace, we found some spare time. We decided to go to Les Grands Montets and utilise the remaining part of the day.
So, on 2nd September 2013 at 2-00pm, we took the free bus no 1 for Argentiere from Chamonix. All the local transport was free of cost to us including Mont Blanc express –Servoz to Vallorcine route. This was due to the fact that we were provided with free guest card for the local transport.
The bus was beautiful with big LCD screens showing the route, the stop arrived and next stop. It took about 35 mins to reach the stop "Les Grand Montets".
The cable car station is located there itself.
We had a 4 day ski multi pass at 78 euros per head, purchased through internet from the official site and received by post in 3 days. The advantage of the multi pass was that it covered many lifts like Brevent, Grand Montet, Aiguille du Midi, Mer de Glace, Tramways dy Mont Blanc, Bossons chairlift etc and gave unlimited access.
There were 2 cable cars- first one from station to Longon at 1970m and second one to 3275m to Grands Montets. It took 20 mins to reach the summit. It is on high altitude but not as high as Aiguille du Midi. We did not have any uneasiness or breathing issue like Aiguille du Midi.
The weather was fine- bright sunny day with deep blue sky. We witnessed all the snow covered peaks- Les Drus, Aiguille Verte and many others and above all-the Argentiere glacier. It was wonderful experience and no words for long time.
When we were happy after enjoying those beautiful views, we took the stairs to go down to Glacier. It was about 200-250 steps, took 10 mins with careful steps for us to reach the glacier.
We were not equipped with mountain shoes or not had any sticks still we walked on the glacier for 30 mins- slowly but carefully. It was a great feeling that our footsteps are marked on the glacier- an achievement!
There are many hiking routes in the glacier but we did not do any.
In fact, we liked to stay more but had no time! Last cable car was at 4-40pm, so became very sad to leave the area, took stairs again and then the cable car to come back.
I love you Grands Montets. I promise that next time I will keep a full morning session for you. You are not rank 10 or 11 to me, should stand in 2nd or 3rd position.

This is a very good ski area, especially for those who crave some off piste. We had reasonable snow conditions early in the week, however, a massive dump of snow mid-week seemingly brought out every skier for 200km! When busy the lifts can be a little slow and we had a couple of long waits to get to the snow. However, sometimes taking the chairlift up can be a better option than the cable car. I'm an intermediate skier and found it a great area to ski. My wife is not a very confident skier but still managed to get down some challenging runs. Maybe not the best place for complete beginners but everyone else will find something to challenge them.
