“The transportation system on the mountain is a joke - be prepared for long waits!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2013

What a joke - famous for its offpiste skiing/snowboarding, you pay extra for using the top lift. Any lift in and around Chamonix besides Aqueil du Midi (which is not classically a skiing place either, it is just offpiste riders and visitors who come for the view of the Mont Blanc) is included in the skiing ticket but this one lift.
The lift systems are really old - and I mean really, really old. Right now, the main gondola is 50 years old - and they are proud of it!! If you want to simply go to the slopes, take the chair lift at the bottom, else you will wait up to 1.5 hours at the bottom station if there is new snow or a special weekend...
Then the lift for going onwards to the top even breaks that limit - we were queuing for 2 hours (even though there was a sign, from this point on 45mins...well, it took us 1.5 hours from that point on). Annoying.
No matter how good the offpiste was - I don't plan on returning ever to Chamonix for snowboarding...

“Graet Piste - Amazing Snow”

love it here at Grands Montets - great Red and Black runs along with off piste opportunity. Food good up the mountain and when there is a blue sky powder day this really is the place to be!

“Excellent skiing”

Terrific on/off piste skiing........long runs......
unfortunately (and the same case at nearly all the Chamonix ski areas) ghastly on-mountain restaurants....very unfortunate.....

“Fantastic skiing and incredible views”

Definitely our favorite of the official ski areas around Chamonix. Varied terrain, and we especially liked the runs down from the top of the second cable car. Fantastic views when sunny, and nice long runs!

“Skiing at Grands Montets, Chamonix”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2013

Some of the best skiing in the Alps, if not the world, compromised by the lazy attitude of CMB (Compagnie du Mont Blanc).

Firstly just getting there is not easy. No connection from the local train station so you have to either drive or get the bus. The bus is long and painful and the large car park often results in a long walk.

There are two lifts up out of the car park. One is an ancient cable car that frequently sees queues of one hour and the other is a four-person chair. Unfortunately the four-person chair is a further walk and they reduce it to two-person whenever it snows. Just when you need more capacity not less.

On the mountain Le Herse and Bochard are excellent lifts which cope well with any crowds but all the others are old rickety chairs.

The facilities on the mountain are lacking. There is an almost total absence of public toilets and the two which exist are both hidden in basements down many stairs - torturous in ski boots - and are both smelly and dirty.

Get past these inadequacies and the skiing is immense; very long varied runs often with good snow because of the altitude and some of the best mountain scenery in the world.

Just remember to bring a pack lunch because the restaurants are slow, unimaginative and expensive.

CMB are trading on the quality of the scenery and really need to take a hard look at how other resorts are providing comfortable lifts, public toilets, lockers, and better infrastructure.
