“Annecy - Beautiful!”
Reviewed July 3, 2010

We drove here using our GPS but it seemed like we were driving on sidewalks - old, very narrow streets! However, the whole area is very picturesque. After dropping me off, my husband parked at the Hotel de Ville parking garage which is a little bit of a walk but okay. We found the hotel personnel to be very friendly and helpful. The first room we had did not have working air conditioning so we moved to another room which was fine but did not have as good a view. It is true that there is a lot of up-and-down walking on each floor, as a previous review stated. I was able to negotiate free wifi. (We did not book ahead, just walked in.)

We visited Annecy as I was taking part in the Annecy half Marathon (which, along with the Marathon, along the lakeside, a brilliant event - well organised and supported with fantastic lake views, take note the runners amongst you!). This hotel has a near perfect location right next to the iconic old prison on the canal, in the historic centre and close to the shops, parks and lake's leisure facilities. Because of the volcanic ash event we had to drive from Wales and arrived "out of hours" in the middle of the nights but were welcomed by a charming and well-dressed nighrt porter. The rest of the English-speaking staff- receptionists and cleaning staff - were equally friendly and welcoming. It's a discreet place where you let yourself in the front door with your room key when no one is on reception.
Rooms are fairly small but we had a bathtub (not all do) although we had only booked a (charme) room (44), one of the more modest. Our friends had a larger room with 2 panoramic windows with views over the lake and a more modern TV, but no bathtub (302). We both had air conditioning/heating, minibar and ample wardrobe space.
The best surprise was the tranquility - other reviews have suggested there is a lot of noise from the street but in fact all windows are double glazed (check when you book but ours certtianly were - once you close the window there is total silence. Rooms are separated by heavy wooden doors so we heard nothing from our neighbours either. Sleep was blissful! Of cvourse if you want open windows at night it would be noisy. You can turn on the (rather weak) air conditioning and shut the window if sleep is a priority.
There's good internet access in the lounge, you pay 5 euros for 30 mins
We didn't have the 12 euro breakfast as the bar outside serves excellent breakfasts where you can sut and watch the world go by (at least most of Japan does) and the restaurant next to it, Le Pichet, offers excellent value.
.Would have given the hotel 5 stars but for the rather weak air conditioning in both rooms but I like it cold! Also it is hard to find in the car- we were helped in the middle of the night by a street cleaner. The nearest free parking we could find is Parking du Tillier, about a 400m walk down the western side of the lake just beyond the police station (it looks like there is free parking in the police station car park too but we didn't check it our properly). parking is also free evertwhere from 7pm till 9am so you can park near the hotel at night and move to the free park in the morning.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights last week. It is in the most beautiful location in old Annecy. We stayed in room 203 which had a balcony and looked down on the canal. The people who owned the hotel and their staff, were kind, friendly and helpful. Delightful hotel, delightful people in a perfect location and we will definitely return.

The location of this hotel in old Annecy was good and our room was clean and nice. We had an upstairs corner room which offered two windows overlooking the old prison and waterway below. The hotel staff seemed very indifferent to us which was disappointing. I liked the town and the lake is beautiful. We rented bikes and rode around the lake. I would stay elsewhere next time.

Pros:
-This hotel has hands down the best location if you want to explore old town Annecy. It is smack dab in the middle of everything.
-We stayed in their nicest room and it was great- beautiful huge windows, views of the castle and the lake, a little balcony and a comfy bed.
-All the staff was very nice and professional.

Con:
-It's a very old building so the windows have no soundproofing. We could hear the kids loitering around at night. Also they collect the trash for all the surrounding restaurants right outside the hotel. It sounds like a diesel truck was parked in the middle of the room. Very loud!

If you want to stay in Annecy, this is the place! But if you are not a night owl or a light sleeper, I would recommend earplugs.

I had chosen this hotel based on the positive reviews received on this site and the room looked nice on the website.

As it was a belated honeymoon and my husbands birthday I decided to push the boat out and I booked their second best room - best room already booked. It was awful. It was totally overpriced - €225 per night.

We had intended staying for there for our entire visit but moved out on the Friday. Room was ok size but really shabby, warn carpets, tiny bath, wooden flooring had gaps in it, blinds outside window kept banging against window frame and this combined with the street noise - bin lorries, late night revellers, etc meant we got very little sleep, The lift had a terrible smell which we think was from the drains.

The staff on the desk were completely disinterested in us - barely a bon jour between them and when we told them about the noisy room they said there was nothing they could do.

Breakfast was not worth the money - however the breakfast lady was the friendliest person at the hotel and made a huge effort to communicate with us even though she had no english. We had a much nicer breakfast in a local cafe in the market. It nearly ruined our long awaited holiday had we not found a complete oasis of luxury and calm in Talloires.

The only positive about the hotel is that it is central.

My husband and I spent the weekend in Annecy and chose the Palais Hotel because we we looking for a central location at a cheap(ish) rate.

We were pleasantly surprised at the amazing location. Really, it's smack-dab in the middle of town and even the side rooms have nice views of the old town below. As some people have mentioned, however, it's VERY difficult to find. We finally parked in a paid lot, walked to the hotel, checked in, and decided to just carry our luggage the few blocks to the hotel instead of trying to drive - I might suggest you do the same.

The room was small and somewhat awkward, and our TV set had a weird buzzing sound sometimes, but everything was quite clean and the bed was comfy.

Service was just OK. The women working at the front desk weren't terribly outgoing, but they were polite enough, and gave us information when we needed it. They also comped us a free 30-minute Internet card, so that was nice!

The only weird thing that happened was that they took the really comfy duvet cover off after the first night, and then the covers were sort of scratchy. But all in all, no big deal.

A great bonus is the farmer's market held right near the hotel on Sundays. Make sure to go.

The one big downside? THE NOISE. This hotel has paper-thin walls and you can hear every conversation from adjacent rooms. Fortunately, our neighbors were quiet.

All in all, the price for this hotel is great, and we'd definitely stay again.
