Hotel Gounod
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 14, 2013

The sun is shining and we headed to our hotel in the center of Saint Remy called
the Gounod Hotel named after the composer Gounod who wrote his opera here.
After driving around the block several times we finally found the correct street, parked
and checked into our hotel. At first glance the hotel lobby is off pudding, smells funny
and is filled to the rafters with tschotkes and religious objects...oh my. I am now
concerned about my choice

However, the front end guy was very funny and very welcoming . Showed us to our room and surprise surprise to see a lovely courtyard garden and pool.....never would have thought it possible. Our room was very nice and the hotel is located in the heart of Saint Remy....perfect

Our interaction with the hotel staff was great,. Both the front end man and lady helped
us with great restaurant suggestion. Paying extra for their parking was worth it although
a little hard to find.

This hotel is located right in the heart of Saint Remy and I would definitely stay here again
and just close my mind's eye to the reception area. After all how long does one stay in the
reception area. We did not have breakfast here so I don't know about the restaurant

The restaurant recommended by the hotel manager was L Aile ou La Cuisse.. We
ate here twice and it was excellent. Another recommendation was Bistro Des Alpilles
which was terrific.

Room Tip: We requested an easy access room . Our room was on the ground floor facing the courtyard garden

I booked into Hotel Gounod for three nights in the expectation of a quirky, eccentric, colourful hotel (as described in Alistair Sawday's guide) but I'm afraid we found the dark dreary public rooms filled with religious statuary very depressing, the lack of lighting hazardous and though breakfast was good, the surroundings felt grubby because of the predomination of black everything. The beautiful Provencal sunshine didn't seem to penetrate the building at all.
Our room was dull and full of cobwebs and there was not an en-suite bathroom, merely a walk-in shower and sink and separate w.c.
We were given a key to enable us to use the car park if we wished but we did not need to, however when we handed the key back at the end of our stay we were charged for the use of the car park. I explained that we had not used it but was told we should then have returned the key ... we were not told this would be necessary on checking in. The fee was only 15 Euro but it was the principle and the manner of the man who become terribly agitated and aggressive in relentlessly arguing the matter! I finally won the day with my school French but we left with a very bad impression and I could never recommend the place to friend or foe!

Room Tip: If in a front facing room, expect to be awoken very early by a daily refuse collection!

Stayed here in June and it was perfect! Rooms are beautifully decorated, our room was incredibly quiet with a beautiful balcony overlooking the courtyard. Very evident that the hotel is "loved" by it's owners. The location is absolutely perfect ... walking distance to everything and market day is at your doorstep. Breakfast was very nice, organic foods and service with a smile! Lots of history at this hotel as well. We will return to Provence and would certainly stay here again without hesitation and highly recommend it to others for a great Provence experience.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 31 and it was a beautiful suite!

This historic hotel is at the SE corner or the Saint Remy outer circle adjacent to the main parking area and market area Wednesdays. Make sure you consider paying for a small bit of parking as there is no free parking in Saint Remy. The hotel has parking is 5 Euros a five minute walk away.

The hotel has a very long history and can be reviewed at http://www.hotel-gounod.com/. There are three rooms with baths and room 31 for sure (also has a balcony, large room and view of the outer street from the bathroom), great sunning area with fabulous gardens.

Great staff help you find your way around Saint Remy and while you are at it, try the Glanum ruins, only a 20 minute walk along the Van Gogh walk way. Both of these are worthwhile and great attractions of Saint Remy.

We had such a wonderful stay at Gounod Hotel. All of the staff was friendly and helpful. The location is centrally located to walk around the town and have dinners in the evening. Our room had a very nice terrace overlooking the courtyard, was spotless, and very quiet. The bed was comfortable and the linens were high quality. We started the day on a happy note with breakfast served by the friendly waitress Sophie. Any questions day or night were cheerfully answered by Heidi and Ygor. Secured parking was a pleasure in such a busy little town. We have already recommended this hotel to friends and would love to return.

Room Tip: We reserved a "Charming" room facing the courtyard with a terrace and it was lovely.

Stayed here in September in a Charming Room and loved it. Rooms are very quiet, beautifully and tastefully decorated in Provence colors and style. My room had a nice size terrace overlooking the gardens. Beds are large and very comfortable and bathroom had huge walk-in shower with excellent water pressure. Bed and bath linens are all high quality. Flat screen tv offered a nice selection of channels in multiple languages. Heidi and Ygor are perfect hosts and are happy to help with anything you need. Breakfast was very nice with a selection of traditional French breakfast goodies. I especially loved that the hotel is located right in town, so you walk out the hotel reception area and all the restaurants and shopping are at your finger tips. Lots of history at this hotel also - in 1863 Charles Gounod composed a very famous opera here. I will return to stay here again, and highly recommend for a great Provence experience.

We had a lovely stay at Gounod Hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was peaceful and overlooked the courtyard. The hotel is very centrally located in the town and had conveniently accessible parking, a 3-5 minute walk away. We would definitely return when we are back in Provence.

Room Tip: Overlooking the courtyard
