Le Mas des Tourterelles

Reviewed July 23, 2013

We spent a week here in June as a base for exploring Provence and playing golf. We visited St Remy about 20 years ago and I was worried it wouldn't live up to the good memory I had. It exceeded it, St Remy and in particular Le Mas des Tourterelles is a fantastic place to stay. We rented the apartment for a week and it was a superb base in an ideal spot. I liked the apartment as it gave us that bit more independence. We loved the walk into the village in the morning for fresh croissants with fig jam Carrie and Richard had provided. It was a 5 minute walk into the centre with lots of bars and restaurants but being in a quiet street where you feel totally relaxed and chilled. The apartment was absolutely spotless with a comfortable bed and beautiful white linen. Richard and Carrie could not have been more helpful and accommodating and gave us great recommendations on places and restaurants to visit. I would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I rented the 1 bedroom apartment at Le Mas des Tourterelles at the end of May. The apartment was bright, clean and had a little patio where we could sit outside and have a glass of wine. The location was great - a short walk into town and lots of excellent resaurants to choose from. St. Remy was a perfect base for day trips - some of our favourties were Uze, Mont Ventoux, Village des Bories and Les Baux. Richard and Carrie were great hosts and everything worked out perfectly. We would highly recommend this accomodation.

My fiancee and I rented the "Vine" room for four nights in June, 2013.

PROS:
- It's an easy 1-2 block walk into town.
- Gorgeous, photogenic yard and pool.
- Pretty, clean rooms.
- Plenty of space for parking.
- Reasonable price.
- There's a fridge where Richard & Carrie stock a few drinks to sell at cost. We ended up not taking advantage, but we should have, since the water and sodas were much cheaper than in town.
- Pretty sure this was my fiancee's favorite place we stayed at in France. She still rhapsodizes about it.
- I'm more of a hermit than a people person, but Richard and Carrie are so great that even I can appreciate them. I needed to refuel my rental car before returning it, but local stations don't accept foreign credit cards, and don't accept cash in off-hours (since a station attendant has to be present). Richard went out of his way to lead me to a gas station and make sure I could pay successfully (he was prepared to take my cash and use his credit card). What a stand-up guy!

CONS:
- The shower head has a tendency to spray the toilet and flood the bathroom floor if you're not careful.

It's an old farmhouse, so you'll either read that as "rustic appeal" or "creaky and clanky." Both are accurate.

If you haven't been to the area before, you'll definitely need a car and GPS navigation. Many roads are one-way, many roads were closed when we visited, and many roads wend ways you might not expect.

We stayed for 2 nights in St Remy after several days in the Luberon area of Provence. We chose this B&B because we wanted to be able to walk into the city center of St Remy for dinner without having to drive our rental car. What we didn't realize was how charming and comfortable our accomodation would be, and how helpful our hosts Carrie and Richard would be in suggesting touring and dining opportunities in the area. We had the most comfortable bed during our vacation in France. We stayed in the White room on the first floor and had a private patio by the pool outside our bedroom door. Our friends stayed inside the main house and loved the view from their bedroom window. The breakfast included wonderful french press coffee, tea, croissants, baguettes, honey, fruit, and jams. The walk was a leisurely 5 minute stroll from the town center. The restaurants Carrie and Richard recommended were delicious. I only regret that our stay was so short that we didn't get to visit with Carrie and Richard more. I definitely recommend Le Mas des Tourterelles and will stay there when I return to Provence.

Everything was perfect. Nothing was too much trouble for the hosts. The rooms were spacious, clean and very tastefully furnished. The pool area was a very welcome luxury at the end of a day exploring this beautiful region.
The location is perfect! An easy 5-10 minute walk into St.Remy.
I would highly recommend it.

We look forward to returning to Le Mas des Tourterelles every year! Usually we book the Chambre Grise because of the lovely covered seating area outside and because the room is so spacious but this year we opted for the Vine Room, because of it's fantastic views over the stunning Alpilles. We were not disappointed!
We had a very special time here and Richard and Carrie were delightful hosts. They are always prepared to go the extra mile- explaining what is new since our last visits and being very informative about the current best restaurants in St Remy which were just a short walk away.
The pool looked very enticing but it was a little chilly when we were there!
We look forward to our next trip. Thank you Richard and Carrie. Great job!

Room Tip: Choose a different room every time- you won't be disappointed!

Stayed for 3 nights in an upstairs room over the breakfast area. From reading some previous reviews i feel the two rooms in this area must be of a poorer quality and standard than the other 3. Maybe the room location should be reflected and informed when booking.

The bathroom in this room was very small, when one showered it was impossible to stop water from drowning the toilet and floor area due to it being directly in front of the shower with no shower screen or curtain provided. Overall the bathroom was of a very poor standard and let the room down.

The actual bedroom overall was large by european standards, however cleanliness could be improved, especially dusting. However the noise downstairs from breakfast being prepared etc certainly was easily heard in the room.

Breakfast was fair but certainly nothing special.

The area was convenient to the main part of town by a short walk and allowed easy parking and access in and out of town on day trips.

Overall the price for this room was high for the overall standard of the room we were in, especially considering the bathroom.

Room Tip: Request a downstairs room and if not available, look elsewhere.

Thanks for the feedback. We are disappointed you weren’t happy in the Vine room, our favourite room, which every other guest has loved. No two rooms are the same. We are at pains to describe each room accurately on our web site, with photographs, and have had flattering reviews of each.

Working within the constraints of an old building, bathrooms had to be compact. The shower and WC area are on a ‘wet room’ basis and shower curtains are an anathema to us. Bathroom fittings are of the highest quality and we are often complimented on the efficiency of the showers.

Our breakfasts are very special. They comprise fresh croissant and choice of breads, homemade fig and apricot jam, local honey, with a selection of cereals, yoghurts, juice and seasonal fruit.

It is difficult for us to accept that cleanliness of the room could be improved. Carrie checks the rooms personally before each guest arrives.

Clearly the relaxed style of the Mas des Tourterelles was not for you.
