This was why we came to Marseille. We wanted to try La Veritable Bouillabasse and we were not disappointed.
This is truly an eating experience. It is certainly not cheap but if you love fish and want to try the real thing, eat at Michel's.
Booking is essential. We saw 14 potential diners turned away after 8.30pm so book early and have the fabulous squid to start and then prepare yourself for a very real treat. The wines were very fairly priced.
A great meal in an amazing restaurant. Do go!

Chez Michel is an old restaurant full of tradition. You can't help but admire the respect with which the personnel handles the fish - and I can't imagine a better place to have the 100% Bouillabaisse experience than Chez Michel. But remember - bouillabaisse takes time to digest, so best time to have it is lunch!
Bon Appetit!

There are other restaurants offering a good Bouillabaisse, even more creative or newer or fancier ones, but at Chez Michel you get the real one. It is prepared fresh (when you order, not before) and they don't use shellfish as so many do these days to sell it a lower price but still making the same profit. At Michel, you pay the price, no doubt about that, but that's the way it is if you want quality, traditional recepies and excellent preparation. The mayonnaise for instance is homemade and thus it looks different than the crap you buy in the department store and it tastes like mayo should taste. The rouille is made without mashed potatoes (at least in summertime as we were told) but with mayo and the right amount of garlic and it is very tasty! The four different fish they use are accompanied with potatoes soaked in safran and orange which not only enriches the flavor but also adds some nice colors. We had a rather pricy but excellent and perfectly chilled Sancerre and as desert a fresh strawberry tart that was to die for. The service was impeccable! A little frosty at the beginning but if you you treat people with respect and ask a few questions about their Bouillabaisse you will be rewarded with first class treatment! The interior is not the reason you should go there except for the plates that perfectly match the color of the Bouillabaisse. And one last thing, if you go to Michel to eat anything else than a Bouillabaisse, don't, you would miss Marseille's gastronomical highlight!

We as a group of business men "Chez Michel" was a great treat for a very long work day
Or local friend advise us to go for the famous fish dish called Bouillabaisse and it was worth it with no matter for the hefty price tag the dish was excellent with owner (grand son of the owner) always around chatting with him about the the 67 years old heritage

Lovely restaurant in a great position. Welcomed at the door by uniformed staff, escorted to our table. Made very welcome and the matre de explained the menu after getting us a drink. Very limited choices, poached fish or bouillabaisse. We weren't told in Lyon that real bouillabaisse should cost over 60 euro because you need good fish properly cooked and presented. This restaurant certainly served up a superb meal. Fish was presented and explained then after a champagne the broth appeared and the fish were filleted at our table, we were instructed on how we should eat it. The broth was superb the fish beautiful and together with the crotons and the dressing that flavours the broth it really made it a meal to remember. The matre de advised us on a wine, a half bottle from Cassis that was excellent. Altogether a superb meal of real bouillabaisse in a beautiful setting.
