“Fading away”

Arc de Triomphe ( Porte d'Aix )
Reviewed June 13, 2013

If you want to see how not to position a monument, give this a quick visit. Maybe in a few years this area will be spruced up, but at the moment it is a rubbish-strewn landmark, ignored and pretty tatty. Imagine if this was a 'square' for pedestrians and coffee-takers.

It was a great tribute to the original up in Paris but it is surrounded by old, dingy surrounds and could well do with a lease of life around it to help it stand out more.

As I was walking along the back alleys from the Old Port, I noticed a sign board which said Arc de Triomphe. I was a little confused at first, because my history books said Paris! But, this intrigued me and i foolewed the directions. From the intersection, in the far distant horizon was defintely something that looked interesting. It was situated on top of a Hillock and from the distant it was quite an impressive sight. i walked all the way up and came to this square where The Arc de triomphe, another one, was situated. It is by the side of the road so be careful when crossing. The architecture is impressive and a good place for photography.

We walked this way on one on the walks on the tourist map.as we walked across the road we could see arc de triomphe not far away on the brow of the hill so came up that little bit further. Perhaps a little smaller than it looked from a distance it was nonetheless an impressive creation. Perfectly proportioned with some great sculpture friezes and a perfect view down the straight road towards the oblique at the far end. We had to dodge the roundabout traffic to het to the centre and up against and in the arc itself. The road layout is an untidy mess, the centre was partially surrounded by partly broken down safety barriers, lots of weeds coming up through the paving and all about. If it weren't for the constant loud traffic noise and a fair number of pedestrians crossing various parts of the roads then we might almost have expected tumble weed gently bouncing and twirling about. I have now read the history of the design and building of the monument built between the mid eighteen twenties and and late thirties. I have seen the interesting comments and the YouTube footage of the unusual disturbances about a year or so ago, posted in response to my Forum enquiry as to why there had not been a previous listing of something so obviously important. The impression is given that the local tourist authorities have been trying to leave the Arc de Triomph out of the smartening up job and the publicity being given to many parts of the city for next years time as European Capital of Culture. If that is right then it seems to us as visitors as a huge gap in the important social history of the city. I am pleased that it is now listed and I strongly recommend anyone spending even only a day or so in Marseille to come up here and take a look.
