When you stay in a 5 star hotel you expect nice rooms, great amenities and impeccable service. Whilst the two restaurants were pretty good, that would be expected given the prices. The swimming pool was a disappointment and difficult to get to - via the spa, down 1 floor in a lift and then into another lift to go back up a floor. Takes away any opportunity to relax.
My main concern however was the service at breakfast. The first morning we were mostly ignored. I had to chase someone to get coffee, and another to get forks after they had been forgotten by whoever set our table. When we went to what looked like the ‘egg station’ we were told we could not order from the chef but had to see the waiter. Unfortunately they did not come near our table at all. The next day was not much better, with one waiter not coming back with the coffee we requested.
Finally when trying to put a couple of cold drinks in the fridge (it was a very hot day) it turned out to be one with the sensors - I thought hotels had realised that guests hate these things and stopped using them....
So, nice hotel but I think it relies on the location and view more than giving their guests a great experience.

Arrived at hotel to a welcoming and swift check in. All staff during stay were polite and friendly. The hotel is immaculate and tastefully decorated. We stayed in a room with view if the old port and notra dame. The room was spacious and had ample storage. Large bathroom with shower and bath separate. The room was serviced twice daily. We didnt eat at the hotel so cannot comment on food or drink. The only minor niggle is the mini bar that has a tiny area for visitors use. It is too small to even fit the water bottles that were left for us daily. We had to call for ice buckets to cool down drinks which were delivered very quickly but is a shame that we cannot either get ice from an ice machine or have more space in the fridge.

This hotel is beautiful and a great example of a quality Intercontinental. If you choose to stay here be prepared for up hill walking but it is worth it.

The hotel staff are fantastic, friendly, informed and spot on. Whoever designed the interior seriously messed up. This was an old hospital converted into a hotel. What was high ceilings was squeezed to put in smallish rooms - unless you are in one of the wonderful suites overlooking the bay. (Which I did not see). You do NOT want to be on the second floor with “garden view” - it is like being in a bunker. The garden is banal and plain. So much could be done with greater design flair that it is a real shame. But otherwise great location/ great staff / great service.

Dear Mister,

Thanks for choosing InterContinental Marseille - Hotel Dieu for your stay and for taking time to share your comment.

We’re glad to read that you enjoyed the location of our hotel, our team and services.

The design of the hotel was made by Jean-Philippe Nuel a renowned architect who did all the interior design and architecture. The mineral character of the city and the position onto the Mediterranean sea were the inspiration for the interior decoration. The external architecture was made by Tangram agency.
We’re sorry that the design didn’t meet your expectations.

The hotel proposes rooms with view on the Vieux-Port, for your next stay, don’t hesitate to ask during your booking.

We’re looking forward to welcome you soon in Marseille!

Yours Sincerely,

Leslie Cherfils,

This was our second stay at the hotel. The first stay generated really good comments about the staff and the service. And there were nice things to say about the room and the public areas. All that is still correct. This time though the hotel staff helped us through a bad experience in a special way. My wife had an accident in the city in which she was hurt. The hotel staff was amazing. Once she’d been treated at the scene by ambulance guys and we’d got back to our room they sent up in house first aiders to check her out again. The following morning they arranged for a doctor and a nurse. All this as done seamlessly and with smiles. Housekeeping was obliged was obliged to clean the room out of time - also done really well. And all of this arranged by a trainee concierge called Camille who deserves special thanks. Some trainee! As the title suggests - brilliant.

Great location, two steps away from "Le Vieux Port" & "Le Panier". Heritage building with great architecture. Interior design is very sober and simple, so as the rooms. Hotel was fully booked and our room was very far from the elevators, with a baby and a kid it became very inconvenient. View on a patio which is mostly used for the conference room cigarette break and breakfast so if you sleep with the window open you will hear the noise and enjoy the smell of cigarette in your room.
Other problem in the room not network coverage for the phone and no proper wifi working, which becomes complicated for communication. We stayed 3 nights and the wifi was not fixed during that time.

Breakfast was good with a great view however the breakfast buffet is in the tiniest room ever (washrooms are bigger) which can become complicated during rush hour.

Overall staff was nice and welcoming expect few exceptions who made us feel not very welcome and judged. Not all the staff is English speaking, which became an issue for my family to explain requirement on the phone or in the restaurant.

In terms of pricing, the hotel is little over priced, size of the room was little small for 2 adults, 1 kid and 1 baby and if you are not in the highest category with view. Parking is chargeable per day.

Improvement are required but it remains an iconic stay in Marseille.
