We were pleased to be able to stay at this magnificent hotel for several nights in January.
I am a bit perplexed by other reviewers who suggest it is not centrally located -- across from the Pavillon Daviel (city hall), backing to the Panier (old town) and just a couple of minutes walk to the old port. For us, one couldn't be more "central."
I was also confused by those who suggested the décor to be out of character for the area -- the horizontal striping perfectly echoes both the La Major Cathedral and Notre Dame de la Garde, the latter of which provides an amazing view to patrons of the dining room, deck and some of the upgraded rooms.
Though we did not enjoy a room upgrade, we had a large, well appointed room overlooking the garden. Our bathroom had both a shower and a large soaking tub with an elegant gray-on-gray and cream décor.
The room was well equipped with a coffee maker and mini-bar which, at our request, was emptied to provide room for our in-room wines and snacks. In addition, we never had a problem with the free Wi-Fi included in the room rate.
Though the formal dining room was closed during our visit, the food and service were both spectacular at the brasserie, Les Fenêtres.
The impressive building is a bit intimidating, but the staff was warm and welcoming -- from the front desk agents to the concierge to the bellmen (especially Christoph) to the dining room manager -- we were always acknowledged and given a warm welcome.
Like other reviewers, we found access to the pool to be a bit challenging, but appreciate the challenges of maintaining historic integrity when renovating, The reward for persistence is a beautiful pool worth one's efforts.
