Owners renovated this former hospital to a stunning standard - bold clean stone with view over vieux port. Excellent bar. Superb huge room with marble bathroom and walk in shower. Great concierge and front office staff.

At last Marseille has a world-class hotel! I have been in and out of the city for more than two decades and frequently made hotel arrangements for others, and until now the city never offered a hotel on a par with its economic importance and tourism potential. Mercifully and belatedly, all that has just changed.

The Intercontinental Marseille Hotel-Dieu is not only the best in Marseille but a great experience in itself. It occupies a magnificent and respectfully restored classic structure on a hill with a breathtaking view of the old port and Marseille’s iconic hilltop cathedral. Our welcome on arriving at the hotel early in December was exceptionally cordial (a Mr. Rahbé), the room comfortable, clean and pleasantly decorated. The hotel is an easy and pleasant five minute walk to the center of the business district and about the same distance to the spectacular and newly restored St. Jean Fort and the new Museum of the Mediterranean and to the Museum of the Vieille Charité- it could hardly be better located. Numerous restaurants, including one of my all-time favorites in France, Chez Etienne, are close at hand. We had a package which included the breakfast buffet, which we found to be excellent and on a par with some of the better hotels in Asia. The staff was uniformly courteous and helpful. Overall my wife and I had a particularly favorable impression of this hotel which we found to be a very good value for this level of comfort. We recommend it highly to others. It is a new (and obviously well managed) plus for France’s Mediterranean capital.

Room Tip: For a good view, request NOT to have a courtyard room.

Large room with a large covered terrace overlooking Vieux Port.
Impeccable service and a a special tribute to the Concierge Jakob who helped out with both restaurants and things to see.

If you want to be spoilt book this hotel and enjoy.

I have been many times and to many hotels in Marseille and the Hotel Dieu is by far the best. Superb original architecture, splendid renovation with great design, super friendly and efficient service (rare these days....). The room was really nice and big, comfortable, thought through in the details, with great and luxurious installation and beautiful design. The breakfast was delicious (with freshly made fruit juice served at the table). The service was really amazing. If I had to make one negative critic, it would be for the lifts, which are too small and too busy. Outstanding hotel and the best was the price - we paid 240€ breakfast included. Splendid.

Dear BernieBird,

It is a pleasure to read such lovely comments from our clients. Regarding the lifts, unfortunately we had to build within existing spaces and walls.
We are really happy to see how much you enjoyed your stay with us.
It would be a great honour to welcome you back at the Intercontinental Marseille Hotel Dieu for another magical experience.

Yours sincerely,

My wife joined me on a recent business trip with low expectations of Marseille (sad to say an undeserved reputation precedes it). We figured that at a minimum the Intercontinental Hotel Dieu would at least be a great place for the stay, as every Intercontinental we've stayed at has live up to our standards. We were very impressed with this particular property and the service the staff provided from the moment we arrived. We were treated extremely well, had an incredible room overlooking the harbor (ask for room 430), enjoy some great meals on site in the hotel restaurant and "bar", and had an incredibly wonderful meal at a restaurant call Miramar at the suggestion of the concierge.

This property has some history to it. I won't do it justice by adding that in myself. If you're ever in Marseille, or nearby, be sure to book at least a night here and enjoy the luxury of a brand new hotel with all modern amenities in a very old, historic, but well done restoration to the building. Location is great and you'll be treated like a truly valued guest. Enjoy!

Room Tip: 430 was our room and we loved it. I think any of the rooms on the harbor view side of the hotel will...

Great hotel, stylish well run and with a superb location.

We had an executive room and it was superb- on a corridor of two rooms accessed by an old wooden door and a balcony with superb views.100 TV channels (all 4 BBC channels!!). Short walk to the harbour side its bars and restaurants with tourist sites on the door step.

Only downside was the Breakfast which was disappointing and set in a very small room. Thankfully we were able to eat on the terrace which in November was amazing.

We stayed in the hotel right after it opened - and you could argue it is normal that not everything will be perfect and working, but at a hotel of this brand and recognition I would set a higher standard of expectations.

Getting to the spa if you don't have a map was rather impossible - even the staff didn't know. The cleaning lady (lovely but...) spoke neither French nor English so we could not communicate with her. The breakfast was a mess with the staff not managing the needs and amount of guests.

That said the property is amazing, the staff is charming and the feedback, even negative, well received and listened to. A fantastic overall place to stay in, with even more potential. Will hopefully be back to see the changes;-).
