Best Western Hotel Marseille Bourse Vieux Port by HappyCulture
Ranked #37 of 131 Hotels in Marseille
Reviewed September 21, 2013

This hotel was in a great location near the old port, as well as on the tram line. Outside the hotel was a bit rough (as is the exterior), especially when we came in late at night, but the hotel was an oasis with extremely friendly staff, fresh, clean rooms, and a comfortable memoryfoam bed.

A very close and safe walk to the old port, and close to the train station. Make sure to take the main street up to the train station, since the more direct way cross through some very rough back alleys. The staff worked hard to make sure we had everything we needed, made a real effort with their English, and even provided us with some Marseille soap as a souvenir of our visit.

The value of this hotel as compared to the other hotels near the Old Port was incredible. Marseille can be a bit rough around the edges (although I found this to be a real part of it's charm), but was well worth the visit.

The Abbey (bare and crypt-like) and Notre Dame de la Garde (the nautical theme of the church was beautiful and down to earth - you could really feel the history families coming here to pray for the safe return of the fisherman) were some of my favourite churches in France. We also visited a number of excellent museums and the Le Panier District (it was a bit too quiet, but we did buy some nice crafts here). Unfortunately, the sea was too rough for a visit to the Chateau d'If. A lot of people come to Marseille for the Bouillabaisse, but my favourite was the Soupions - a simple dish of squid (calamari), garlic and herbs, served with bread and wine. A reasonable and delicious lunch.

I would definitely visit Marseille again (we weren't expecting too much, since it is very much a working class city, but it had a wonderful charm with a ton of history), and would certainly stay at the Quality Hotel again.

This hotel is very central, right opposite to the bus terminus and a few metres away from the port. Very clean and tidy, comfortable rooms with a/c and very helpful staff. Breakfast is also very good and fresh. One of the best 3 star hotels I stayed in.

This hotel has the NICEST staff of any hotel I've stayed at. We were here for 8 (!) nights and both the weekday and weekend staff were great. We were given a family room, apparently they have only one so if you book over the internet on their or other sites it won't show up and need to call for this. It's a room with a double and 2 single beds, separated by a door so it's great for privacy. First the cons - we checked in during the last days of Ramadan and since the hotel is right next to an Islam cultural centre and our room was facing the side of their entrance, we were bombarded with LOUD calls for prayers early in the morning and also at late night. The bathroom was very small with a small shower which leaked on the sides with a door that didn't close tight so we almost flooded the room at one point. They had promised to fix this but it didn't happen during our stay, presumably because it's it's August and no one was available but we were careful and it didn't flood again. Room service wasn't the best in terms of replacing toilet paper and towels but this is a minor point since we were allowed to help ourselves to the supply cart on the floor. Now the pros. The staff was great - everyone from reception to cleaning staff. Corinne at reception was so friendly and responsive to our needs. When we complained about the loud prayers she offered to move us to new rooms (which we ended up not doing since Ramadan was over by the time other rooms were available). Internet was good and fast enough. And the room had lots of electricity plugs which is unusual for a hotel and was important for us as a family with several laptops and tablets :-). The breakfast ladies were ALL really nice. We had booked the room with the "lunch box" offer which is a brown bag with a drink, sandwich and snack and you have to ask for this in advance from the breakfast ladies, who would always prepare them with a smile. Breakfast is a buffet with croissants and other pastries, bread, ham, hard boiled eggs and a good variety of yogurt. They have a good coffee machine too, just skip the cappuccino though which I thought was nasty. And wow, the location is fantastic! It's a few minutes' walk to the port and everywhere else! There is a smallish mall across the street, the Centre Bourse with Galeries Lafayette, FNAC book store, etc, and if you want fresh fruits there is a very reasonable outdoor market a few minutes' walk away near the Noailles Metro station When we were deciding on a hotel, we were between this one and the Suite Novotel Euromed which was running a special deal at the same price with museum entries and use of a car, and although that would've been the more comfortable hotel (this is a relatively basic hotel) we were glad we chose this more conveniently-located one! It was an easy 10-15 mins walk from the St Charles railway station so it was easy to take the train or bus to the airport. Just call the hotel for public transport directions to the hotel from the airport unless you don't mind paying the 75 Euro taxi fare (bus is 8 per person from the airport to the station, train is around 5 but it doesn't run as frequently as the bus.) All in all, we had an EXCELLENT experience staying at this hotel, even with the glitches mentioned above.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, ask for the quieter side of the hotel during Ramadan season. Call to ge...

We originally wanted to go to Montpellier, but the Tour de France messed everything up, so we took a chance on Marseille. After looking at different properties and inquiring at different B&Bs, I decided on the Quality Hotel because of its proximity to the train station and the port. I was a little disappointed when we got to the room (granted we just came from an amazing B&B in Beziers), because of its size and character, and it didn’t look anything like the photos on the website. I felt like I was in a dorm room or hostel but without the chaos, at least the room we were in. But the Quality does have some good points.

The Quality location is great! It’s right across the street from a big indoor shopping mall, and about three blocks from the Vieux Port. I requested a quiet twin room, and we got a small albeit quiet room on the side of the hotel. Not much of a view, but we didn’t care, because it was very quiet. The beds were soft, a little on the small side, but worked. My only concern was that the built-in nightstands had these corners, and one night I opened my eyes to the pointed edge. There’s a small closet with a safe on the bottom, which may be difficult for some. There’s a small desk that is attached to the closet and a plastic chair. What the room lacks in mobility, it makes up in using space efficiently.

The bathroom is small but the shower is a good size. I thought it was interesting that there was a soap dispenser, which does make it easier than a slippery bar, but reminded me of a dorm. The room also had a great AC system, and since the room was so small, it didn’t take to long to cool down. WiFi is free and worked well. One thing I noticed is they had these wooden thresholds in front of each door to cut down on noise from the hallway.

The staff is great! Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful. We used the laundry service which some may consider pricey, but a convenience and worth it since we’d been traveling for about six days. Breakfast was included, but we only went down on the day we were leaving, only because we woke up late each day. Nice array of pastries, yogurt, fruit, coffee, juice, meat and cheese, and the young woman working was very nice.

This is a basic hotel that provides a good base to explore Marseille and a place to shower and sleep. The area is fine and it’s close to all. I would consider staying here again if I’m ever back in the area.
