“Nice hotel - recommended!”
Reviewed September 28, 2008

Nice, well maintained hotel! Conveniently located at about 5 minutes walking from the trainstation and about 10-15 minutes walking from the old harbor along well lit and wide streets.

I stayed in one of the non-smoking rooms at the 4th floor facing the street. The room was not very large, but big enough with an on-suite bathroom. The room was very clean and street noise minimal. The hotel's elevator is a curiosity. I've never have seen such a small elevator. There is just about space enough for two people standing side-by-side.

The hotel staff was friendly and very helpfull. All receptionists that I have dealt with spoke good english.

We stayed a couple of nights at the Lutetia after arriving by overnight ferry from Corsica. We went there at 8 am and were greeted by a friendly reception who said "one problem, your room won't be ready until 10am". This wasn't really a problem as we went for breakfast and down to the harbour to see the fish market.

On return we found that we were given a top floor room at the front. There is a mini balcony as well. Fairly clean and good shower. The main problem we had was with the air con. Temps were above 30C while we were in the city so we really needed some air con. Unfortunately not much air, cold or otherwise seemed to come out of the vent. We had the window open so not too bad, although there are a couple of noisy bars downstairs until around 1 am.

The free internet is a nice touch, and if you don't want breakfast just order a coffee or espresso instead. The (very) small lift almost makes the hotel memorable!

I agree with the good reviews on the website. The area is not like a construction site anymore as the tram lines are working now. There is free internet in the foyer. The lift is really tiny but its better than no lift. Its in a great area to get to the train station or to walk to the vieux port.

I agree that its not the greatest area but I didnt feel threatened at any time.

The staff were friendly and courteous. Cleanliness was very high. Excellent value for money, including breakfast which, although extra, had a wide variety of choice to suit all tastes. Location really useful for the station for day trips out.

This is a wonderful little hotel for budget/mid-range (70 euro a night) travelers. Our room was light and airy, and very clean, with a small balcony overlooking the street. There was good sound-proofing with the window closed, we did not hear the street noise at all while going to sleep, and the a/c kept us cool.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast (8 euros extra), though not super fancy, was beyond most 2* hotels' continental breakfasts - a decent variety of breads, cheeses, fruits, juices, and yogurts.
The location is good - within walking distance of the train station, the Old Port, and other central neighborhoods. The area is not the prettiest, it's a bit gritty, but in no way did I feel unsafe.

Thiss place is well worth a look if you have a smallish budget. The rooms are small but clean and have everything you need and the sound proofing is pretty awesome. I stayed here for 5 nights and enjoyed everyone. The staff were incredibly friendly.

The area is not that bad at all. Alot has been made about it other reviews but I did not have a problem. Next to a metro station and 10 minutes to the port on foot whats wrong with that?

Marseille its self is going through major regeneration programme so its like a building site. In 5 years though the place will be awesome!

Hi. I think it is a bit unfair to say that this is a dangerous and run down area in which this hotel is situated. I am surprised people wrote bad reviews regarding the area. Ok it is not the best but it is definately not the worse and I did not feel in any way endangered by walking around it. The big downside is that it is like the whole area is like a building site which is unfortunate. Things should be done step by step rather then going streets by streets.

The hotel itself is beautiful and well worth the price. It was very clean especially the toilet area (the toilets in Marseilles are disgraceful). I was very lucky also in that the receptionist last Sunday could speak English. I did my best with the French but he helped. It is a pity more French would not be so courtious as to not been rude when foreigners are trying to speak their language.

The only downside was the breakfast. It is 8 euros and not worth it. I asked a few times for more coffee and was not given it apart from a few drips of already prepared cold coffee. There isn't really a buffet and the waitress made me feel very uncomfortable bu constantly cleaning around me. Apart from this it is a good, comfortable, safe hote. Recommanded definately.

  • Liked — The room itself and the helpful receptionist last Sunday when I arrived. He helped me a lot and helped me in English
  • Disliked — Breakfast. This was poor and it is best going somewhere else
  • Tips/Secrets — Definately but avoid breakfast. Mine was a quick decision. However if you have time please learn some French. Believe me it helps!
