At my time of staying there was a special Marseille edition of a French newspaper ranking the Sofitel as the best located hotel in Marseille. Since the Novotel and the Sofitel are almost in the same building you can not get better then this. I asked for a room with harbour view and I got one. 90 % of the view consisted of the trees from the neighbouring Parc and Palais du Pharo ( a must see during the evening), 10 % was harbour view. But that was enough to see the Fort St Jean, the marvellous MUCEM and the ferries and cruise ships. The best views seem to be reserved for Sofitel guests. Besides you do not need a harbour view in your room since you will see enough of Marseille while staying at the restaurant or pool bar. Some people wrote that the room carpet was smelly. It is not. It only temporarely keeps the smell you bring from outside. But the carpet is indeed (very) dirty and in need of replacement. In my case the minibar was free (executive room) and with temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius that was very welcome. I had breakfast in town since I am only a small eater and do not need these extensive ans expensive hotel breakfasts. Going by foot to the Vieux Port is very easy but at some moments of the day you will have to deal with a dangerous road crossing from the moment you reach the Port. Do not expect the local drivers to stop at a pedestrian crossing !

Driving in Marseille is no fun and this place took a bit of time to reach (sat nav did find it though). Located right behind the old port, next to/on top of a shopping centre its easy to get to on foot/public transport. First impressions aren't good; the area outside is a little shabby but don't let that put you off-once inside the hotel's fine and its well located (a few minutes walk to the harbour). Parked car in dedicated secure area of the adjacent shopping centre's underground car park.

Its a functional business style hotel; rooms are clean and our room looked like it had been recently renovated. Our rate didn't include breakfast; there's plenty of cafes nearby. Staff were welcoming and helpful.

Hotel is located next to/on top of a shopping centre which looks like its having a major makeover. The building works didn't disturb us but the area around is in a bit of upheaval.

If you're looking for a romantic luxury hotel then I'd look elsewhere (and be prepared to pay alot more) but for us, passing through for a few days it sufficed.

There are three reasons I give this hotel a " very good" rating -- the wonderful view from the restaurant which was great night and day, the breakfast buffet was also quite good -- a wide selection of good quality food -- and the friendly and helpful staff at the front desk.

As many other reviewers have said, the rooms really are a let down --- jaded, faded and even quite tatty. All is not lost --- do up those rooms and this could be a nice hotel.

Until such time, I would stay elsewhere in Marseille to really enjoy this lovey city .
