I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel this September. The staff were extremely helpful and very nice, they really went out of their way to help. This hotel is very basic the rooms are small and there is very little in terms of decoration but its location is fantastic there is a great view of the old port and a nice roof top terrace where you can sit and enjoy the view. If you dont intend to spend much time in your room this hotel is great value.

We stayed in the honeymoon suite for the first night of (naturally) our honeymoon. It was great. The room is a bit small, but shutters keep it very dark at night. The view from the balcony is great, overlooking Marseille's harbour. We had a picnic dinner and enjoyed the sights. The room was also quiet and clean, and the front desk staff were very helpful. The only problem was that the room wasn't ready when we got in (exhausted from our flight) at 2:30 or so in the afternoon. But otherwise, a great stay at a good price.

Stayed one night in this Hotel, would have stayed longer but it was booked out due to a football match in the town the following evening. Liked the location just off the quay side, the room was by french standards average, but clean and bright. bathroom good size and clean. The roof terrace looks out over the whole port. Breadkfast was juice, cereal, youghur, pastries and coffee and plenty of them.

Stayed here for 4 nights in May. Hotel was good value - great location right beside the port. Staff were really friendly and went out of there way to find information on a spot a fair way out of Marseille that we wanted to visit. Rooms were small, but clean. Hotel has a lift which was a blessing seeing as though all of the other hotels in France we stayed in only had staircases. Breakfast was fair - not much variety, but alot better than other hotel breakfasts in France. And, breakfast is able til 1030am (from memory). For 65 euros a night we couldn't complain.

stayed here for 4 nights last week. we had the nuptual [honeymoon]room. this is basically a box on top of the hotel roof with a small staircase up from the roof terrace. it has floor to ceiling patio windows and its own terrace with table chairs. it has THE most amazing view over the vieux port. hotel is 2 star-view is 5 star. the room is clean and bed comfy. is a settee in the room. Only down side is a small toilet/shower room;is clean but people from larger nations may find it a squeeze. its worth it though just for the view. staff friendly and area nothing to worry about [same goes for the city]. so are american friends can go and sleep safely in their bed and enjoy the view[dont shut the curtains!]

Hotel Hermes is very well situated in a side street just up from the main port area with lots of great little restaurants all around. The hotel is quite pleasant and the young man on the desk when we arrived was very helpful and friendly. Same cannot be said for older man who was there in the evening. There was some confusion over keys and he followed us out into the street, yelling at us in French, even though we had told him, in French, that we didn't speak very much of his language (and no, we are not the type of tourists that expect everyone to speak English). So he yelled louder. In the end the six of us walked away as people were starting to stare, and got a very grumpy reception when we returned later that evening. He got even grumpier when I went down to complain that the air conditioning in our room (402) was not working. The temperature was in the mid 30's (celsius) so we spent the night covered in wet towels trying to sleep. A pity we had such an unpleasant experience because it is a nice hotel for the price. Would not go back because of this very unpleasant character.

Great location, tiny room. It is in an older building just behind the old port (we could see the port from our window), but the room is totally modern and really tiny. Very clean, and bright. Stank of too much air freshener or cleaning products. Friendly staff.
We loved the squares and side streets filled with restaurants on the other side of the port, so although Hermes is on the port, we wished we had stayed on the other side. However, the walk back after dinner was pleasant. We didn't get back to the hotel until 11 and it felt perfectly safe around the port.
