We stopped in Marseille on a cruise ship and wanted to climb to the top of this Basilica. It's a fair effort to get to the top as you will climb many steep streets! But the views from the top are beautiful and inside the Basilica is stunning.

Caught the hop on hop off bus here and it dropped us at the bottom of a steep flight of steps. Steep climb to get up here not helped because I tried to do it too fast, take your time and it will be a better experience for you. When you reach the top of the steps there is an entrance door and in here you can find the toilets and gift shop. Another couple of flights of steps gets you into the church which was very beautiful and there is also a crypt. Well worth a visit.

This church is truly dynamic. It set high on top of a hill overlooking the city of Marseille. Anywhere that you would go into the city you can see the church. It is magnificient from the outside and beautiful on the interior. Beautiful sites from the hill.

The best way to get there is with the "train" which is a tractor done up to look like an engine pulling open rail cars. The Basilica is impressive but we found the view from the top of the very high hill overlooking all of the Marseille area even more impressive.

We took the petit train to the top to visit this stunning edifice. It is quite a climb but well worth it for the panoramic view of the city and sea. If you've got the stamina, you can climb the stairs of the tower for an even greater view. The church itself is beautiful inside and the adjoining building have public toilets, visitor center and restaurant. You shouldn't visit Marseille without making the trip to the top.
