“Amazing views from the top, a church lover's paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013

If you only have time to visit one church in Marseille, this should be it. Set on a hill top, it can be seen from all round Vieux port. The views are amazing from the top.

A bus leaves from vieux port and takes you right to the top of the hill outside the church entrance. It is best to arrive early morning to avoid the crowds and to secure a seat on the bus. Otherwise, prepare for a tedious journey.

The church is beautifully designed and its setting is breathtaking. It was the highlight of my visit to Marseille.

“Well worth the hike!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2013

Superb views all round the city - bit of a walk to get here from the port (20 mins, all uphill although you can see it all the way) but it's well worth it. The crypt and basilica are surprisingly small but intimate.

“Great Vistas”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

This cathedral dominates Marseille. I caught the number 60 bus up to it from the stop at Vieux Port. The views all around were amazing. It was brilliant, certainly it's one of the must do's if in this city. The Tourist Little Train also comes up here. Both outside and inside there are great things to see. I was lucky, it was a decent day weatherwise when I visited and I could see all around and up the coast towards Agde. I'm not religious but you don't need to be to appreciate this attraction.

“Best views of Marseille from La Bonne Mere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

Take the bus 60 up the hill to the top because the walk up is quite steep. Almost everywhere you go in Marseille you will see La Bonne Mere looking out over the city and the sea protecting all who venture in. I love the mosaics inside, the marble work, the altar with the silver statue of the Madonna and also all the little boats and planes hanging from the ceiling personalising the church and I really like the fact it's an average size church which makes it feel more intimate.
The views from outside are the most amazing views you'll see of Marseille. Go and check it out.

“Incredible view and Historical”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2013

We took the bus (#60) up to Notre Dame de la Garde, which was a good idea. Situated at the top of a large hill, the Cathedral overlooks, and some would say protects, Marseille. Initially a fort, it later became a devotional site for sailors. It is the only Cathedral I've been in that had hanging model boats and paintings of ships on the walls of the sanctuary. The views are fantastic. End your end visit by walking down from the Cathedral to Vieux Port area.
