“Lovely old town”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

The best thing about the Panier is that it has maintained a "real" feel to it unlike other old-town areas that seem to exist only to serve the tourists. We enjoyed wandering the streets, having a drink at a bar or two and dining in the little independent restaurants. We went on an evening and a Sunday, so not all the little shops and galleries were open, but those we saw seemed nice.

Definitely worth a wander!

“Trendy area”
Reviewed October 24, 2013

Winding narrow hilly streets with little surprises around each corner. Some quirky shops. Lots of eateries, most with al fresco dining, some with music. But many shops shut at 1pm. Found a second hand shop with some things for my friend whose luggage is still missing after 3 days! Be ready for stairs. The Poor house (Hospice de la charite) is an interesting feature, but I didn't go into the museums inside. The Marseille Cathedral is quite nearby and well worth a look - it appears that the design was heavily influenced by that of the duomo in Florence. You can also walk to Le Panier via the Fort St Jean and the new La Galerie de la Mediteranee. All of this may take you more than 3 hours, depending on how long you spend in exhibits/shops.

“Not there yet”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

While this area is billed as a place of artists and workshops, they weren't that easy to find the day I was there.
I'd go to other attractions inless you are staying there.

A few hours of wandering around this area was very enjoyable. Views down to the harbour and churches very good.

“A lovely walk”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

I really advise to have a walk in the Panier. I live in Marseille and it's one of the places in this city that is the most charming. Don't take any map, just walk and roam.
