Very quiet and typical neighborhood, like a village in the centre of Marseille, typical squares, terraces, stylish shops and local restaurants. It's also where the episodes of the never-ending sitcom 'Plus Belle La Vie' are shot. With children it's also possible to benefit from an interactive discovery of this quarter, by downloading a booklet from the site marseille tourisme.

First of all, Panier is not dangerous or unsafe like a reviewer had said. I've been here twice. It's a little run down and the streets depending on where you're from may seem dirty. Panier is a wonderful neighborhood with a labyrinth of small alleys, laundry hung at the windows, little cafes, artist's studios, tourist sovenir shops and artisanal products. Spend half a day walking and stopping for lunch or afternoon tea. The views of the old port from here is beautiful. The tourist signs here are written in English. The are some monuments to visit Vieille Charite and Cathedrale La Major

Great spot for a stroll and a mix of history and modernity (aka cool French street art). Cool little boutiques, cafes and bars

Nice old-styled streets, but nowadays filled with immigrants yelling around with non-french language curses and such things that makes this place a not-so welcoming place to visit...

We took the route suggested in the tourist map available from the hotel and tourist office and it turned out to provide an excellent way around and through this old part of the city. We came up from the Cathedral and out onto the quay near the bottom of Republic. We walked up narrow streets, some stepped, past classic institutional buildings, through two delightful little squares, stopped off at a couple of little cafes for cool drinks and learnt a deal about the history of the city and the port. We had read the warnings that parts of Marseille an be a bit rough and ready and that there may be concerns about theft or worse but there was no a single hint of that as we wandered round. In our days in Marseille we have seen what to us may be an unusually high proportion of males standing around or walking the streets but there seems to be more of that on the big central shopping and business streets or in and around the station entrance than in The Panier. No reservations whatever in recommending a visit to this area to any visitors.
