“5* service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2014

I booked a luxury room with a harbour view for my partner's birthday. When we arrived we found out that the lovely receptionist (Caren) had upgraded us to the Monte Cristo suite! This beautiful penthouse suite was on the 6th floor of the hotel and was simply stunning. We could not believe our luck! We booked a lovely restaurant called Peron (5 minutes down the road, also highly recommended) and when we returned there was a complimentary bottle of champagne waiting for us with a hand-written note.

I tend to book small, independent, boutique hotels for the personalised service and individual charm, but I must say, having stayed in the Sofitel on both my partner's birthday, and my own in Rome in February, I am beginning to change my mind.

Congratulations Sofitel, and many thanks Caren, we'll see you next year!

Dear Guest,
We would like to thank you for sharing your experience on TripAdvisor. It is a pleasure to read such rave. We are thrilled that the charm of our Monte Cristo suite made a lasting impression on you. Located on the 6th floor of our hotel, this “beautiful penthouse” has “stunning” views on the “Vieux Port” of Marseille. We are glad that you could enjoy the landscape with your partner for such a special occasion!
Moreover, we are very happy that you were sensitive to the professionalism and kindness of our staff. Our team works hard, everyday, to make sure every guest feels special. Therefore, Caren was very touched by your lovely comments!
We are also sincerely that honoured your 2 beautiful experiences at Sofitel Marseille and Rome are “making you change your mind” regarding personalised service and individual charm.
We are already looking forward to welcoming you again in our hotel to make you discover our gourmet restaurant Les Trois Forts.

We stayed in Sofitel Bellecour on Juin2014, 29/30 in room 343 a room with terasse looking over the "Vieux Port" of Marseille. An hotel with all you need as traveller: central location, beautifull clear room with perfect bed and bathroom, exceptional breakfast, skilfull staff.
We know why we always look for a Sofitel hotel when travelling, we are always satisfied.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with terasse!

We stayed here for one night on our arrival in France and one night before our departure. The accomodations are ample, the pool is a relief (although crowded), and the staff is exceedingly attentive and pleasant. It is also a short walk to good restaurants and shopping as well as boat services from the port. The only caveat is that the roads are a little hard to follow even with iPhone maps showing the way. Be prepared for unexpectedly fast approaching turns. But the distances are small so it is hard to get far off course.

This 5* Sofitel is closely attached to the 4* Novotel next door, with which it shares a swimming pool (funnily enough, they don't mention that on the web-site). As a result, there is overcrowding, there is also a rather grotty, small and poorly maintained grass area, with traffic thundering by, a shortage of loungers and precisely 3 (!) umbrellas round the pool area; the pool itself is in average condition and needs upgrading. Not 5*. We booked a double room with port view and balcony; in our room, on the 1st. floor, the port view was about 25% obscured by a boat yard, car park and trees; the upper floor rooms would give a much better view, but may be (even more) expensive. Our balcony area was very utilitarian with bare painted breeze-block walls, overhung from the balcony above and rather grotty. The balcony furniture was old and tired. Not 5*. Our room was OK, decent AC, excellent bed, weird decoration on the wall. Small bathroom, good shower in a slippery big bath. Not 5*. Wi-Fi is free for a limited and slow connection. If you want the real thing, it's yours for 9 euros a day. That's a bit like saying, 'the TV is free but the picture is poor, and the sound is distorted, we've got a better service, but you have to pay for it'. Not 5*, Wi-Fi is essential, and if they have a decent connection, then it should be available to all. I can't comment on the breakfast, which costs 27 Euros per person (!), but at that price it should be very special indeed. We didn't use the spa, or the restaurant. The hotel is in an elevated position from the port, the walk down to the town takes about 10-15 minutes. Best to go by taxi. Reception staff are pleasant, and the foyer is welcoming and impressive. But, all-in-all, and at these prices, a disappointment. Personally I'd call this hotel 4*, for the swimming pool area alone, quite apart from several other more minor gripes.

Room Tip: If you want a room with a port view, it'll be limited if they put you in a 1st floor room.

Dear Guest,
We warmly thank you for taking the time to share your impressions on TripAdvisor. We are sincerely sorry to read your disappointment about this recent stay at Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port. Indeed, we do share the pool with the adjacent Novotel and the management of this area falls under their authority. We assure you that your remarks have been submitted to the General Manager of this hotel, in order to solve these problems. For you’re your next stay, our Concierges will be glad to offer you two entrances at the Cercle des Nageurs, an exclusive sports club adjoining the hotel where you will enjoy a privileged relaxing time in both one of the three olympic pools and on the private beach. We also regret if your room did not suit your desires. Our rooms with balcony are always very appreciated by our guests because they are the intermediate category between Superior rooms and penthouses. For your next stay, we invite you to discover our room with terrace where you will enjoy the beautiful sun of Marseille and a panoramic view on the Old Port. Moreover, we do apologize that our WIFI connexion did not match your expectations. This free service is usually enough to surf the internet for professional or entertainment purpose and the high speed paying option is only useful for an extra use. Otherwise, our breakfast has been awarded the Villegiature Prize as the best breakfast hotel in Europe for the quality, variety and originality of the products composing the buffet. However, we are happy that you were sensitive to our staff professionalism and we hope that besides these remarks, you spent a pleasant stopover in Marseille.
Please, be sure that we have taken into consideration these “few things” ; your feedback is precious to us as it helps us to better understand your wishes and to improve our services
Looking forward to regaining your trust and proving you that Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port deserves its 5 stars.
Best regards,

My husband and I stayed at this beautiful hotel while we were in Marseille. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable as well as speaking English fluently. My husband and I both speak French, but not fluently so it was convenient to converse in both languages as needed. The rooms were palatial and luxurious. The view from our room was breathtaking as our windows faced le vieux-port. I cannot say enough positive things about this hotel and look forward to returning to any of its locations when possible.

The swimming pool is not run by Sofitel so the standard in the rest of the hotel is not reflected at the poolside. Think grubby, no parasols (lots of bases to put them on should they have them), unhelpful staff (borderline rude) and completely overcrowded.
The pool is apparently managed by Novotel. If you dismissed the Novotel because of poor reviews like us but want a good pool, keep looking, the Sofitel is not the place for you.
If you want a city break and the pool was not a deciding factor then I highly recommend the hotel. V friendly helpful staff, clean nice rooms with great views. Lunch on the terrace was delicious.

Dear Guest,
We would like to thank you for taking the time to share your experience on TripAdvisor. Your feedback is precious to us. We regret that the pool area did not match your expectations. Please be sure that the information has been passed on to our General Manager. Allow me to tell you that we have an exclusive partnership with “le Cercle des Nageurs”, a private sports club next to our hotel.
Otherwise, despite this inconvenience we are delighted that you spent a lovely stay with us. We are glad to hear that you appreciated the location of our hotel giving on the magical panorama of the Vieux Port. We hope that these privileged instants will leave you long lasting memories. We are also very pleased to know you were sensitive to the professionalism and kindness of our staff and that our Chef’s cuisine, Dominique Frérard’s, made your taste buds sing!
We are looking forward to welcoming you again at the Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port, for your next trip to the South of France.
