We spent two nights in Marseille at Providencia. It was a great choice because the location is almost at equal distances to the Vieux Port, the amazing Vallon des Auffes, the Plage du Prophete (for a refreshing morning swim!), as well as being very close to the Notre Dame de la Garde. Providencia is on the hilly side of Marseille, so there is a bit of climbing to do, if you are walking. We found it very enjoyable though, because the area around Bompard (Roucas Blanc, Vallon de l'Oriol) is simply lovely. Winding narrow streets, shadowed by oleanders and bougainvilleas, with vistas to the Mediterranean, make this part of town look like a village. A definite must see, away from the touristic Vieux port and the noisy Canebiere. If you don't like to walk, it is no problem either. Bus 61 will take you directly to the Vieux Port in no time!
Monique and her elegant yet homey house and garden will let you experience the real Marseille and its people! I warmly recommend this B&B to anyone eager to discover some of the hidden secrets of this enigmatic mediterranean city.
