Mercure Marseille Centre Vieux Port

We found this hotel whilst searching for somewhere to stay near the vieux port. It's location is great, a few minutes from the metro station and only a short walk to the harbour. It is a fairly new hotel, but the lobby area is undergoing some refurbishment, no noise disturbed our stay. Front desk staff are very polite and cheerful. The room was very bright and spacious, clean and modern, excellent bathroom, but sadly shower only, no bath. One of the highlights is the breakfast, included in our rate. There is a vast choice of hot or cold options, excellent coffee and set in a spacious bright restaurant, waiting staff cleared our plates quickly. Given the location, comfort and value, I could find little to not recommend a stay. We would revisit next time in Marseille.

This is an excellent hotel, a few minutes' walk away from the old port and the rue Canebière as well as from the train station. Staff is very friendly and helpful, the reception is open 24 hours a day. The rooms are newly renovated, with a huge TV, fridge, safe, telephone, kettle etc. The view from the upper floors is stunning: you can see from Notre Dame de la Garde to the port. The only negative aspect is the breakfast, which is not included and costs 18€! The buffet was huge and the food delicious but the price is still very high. I would definitely recommend this hotel. The area around the hotel does not seem particularly safe at night, but then most of Marseille - at least the centre - didn't seem to be in my eyes.

This is classified as a 4-star hotel but it is more like a poor 3-star. The location is excellent (beside the Vieux Port in Marseille) but that's the only positive. Staff were very cool, and in one case quite unhelpful. I had requested a room on a lower floor several weeks in advance, but arrived to find I was in a high-floor room. They suggested I change to a 'priviliege' room, available on a lower floor at an additional cost of €40 per night. Foolishly, I accepted. The room was poorly furnished and equipped (no iron for example), and rather dark. Hotel reception area was like an airport, lifts were inadequate, and the bar was pokey and uncomfortable (although service there at least was pleasant). Room service was incredibly slow. Overall, an unpleasant experience. Not at all up to the usually reliable Mercure standard.

So convenient to Vieux Port and shopping and good restaurants. Great breakfasts included with hot and cold stations. A good variety from hams to cheese to breads and eggs. Nice new rooms too. And a very decent room rate. Would not hesitate to stay here again.
