Owner description: Marseille's old port, once a great commercial center for boats arriving from Africa, has recently experienced a dramatic revitalization as a destination for cruise ships.

The place where everybody gather to stroll along the ocean. Next to major attraction's in Marseille, restaurants. Touristic yet with it's own local charm ....

The Old Port, Marseille has received a lot of attention from the city and country in the past couple of years. The "mirror" is a particular gem, but the whole atmosphere around the port is lively, with buskers, restaurants around the port, and various cruises. The best time to go is early in the morning, when the fisherman are bringing in their catch. Best of all, you and children can be entertained for an hour or more for free!

We really enjoyed walking along the old port, stopping for drinks at outdoor cafes, and shopping the many small shops along the quay. Most of all, we enjoyed the amazing historical sites along the route, from Greek and Roman ruins, to more modern monuments.

Large harbor and marina with many sailboats. Performance artists, people selling fresh fish, numerous restaurants and shops. Lively spot. We took a shuttle form the port and found this a great place to wander and get a pot of mussels. You can pick up a hop on or petit train tour here. Enjoy!

In the morning at the base of the port there are fishermen selling their hauls here to local people and restaurants. The scene can make for some nice pictures but its not the raucousness of the San Fran or Seattle markets.

The port is lined with restaurants and souvenir shops. They are not the best places to eat in Marseilles but they do provide nice views of the boats, forts, and churches.

Buskers will sometimes come through while you are eating to provide some entertainment.
