Owner description: Marseille's old port, once a great commercial center for boats arriving from Africa, has recently experienced a dramatic revitalization as a destination for cruise ships.

Fascinating fish market. Boats to Chateau d'If and Frioul isles. Little train -2 routes. Centre for buses & metro. So much to do in this area- we spent 6 days here. Santons fair and Christmas markets. Museums +++ Opera "The meeting place of the entire world" (Alexandre Dumas)

The vieux port is the city downtown where you meet tourists from all over the world. Here, you have several types of restaurants where you can have lunch or dinner. It is obviously more expensive than eating in other parts of the city but the peace that this place transmits you is amazing.
At weekends, you have artisans selling their works such as aromatic soaps, parfums, etc.

I love the architecture and history of this port. Before I visited, many of the reviews said it was so dangerous that I almost didn't go. If you keep your wits about you and your purse secure, you will have no problems, as in any big city. We stayed in the area of the port, though, as we were only here for one day. The cafe's were lovely, and I enjoyed the ambience very much. Took lots and lots of photos, which is part of the reason for my travel. The buildings are amazing!! It feels very international here, more so than other parts of France, and almost feels like a different country from Paris! The weather was warm and a bit humid; light jacket in the evening. What I disliked is basically the public toilets, even in some restaurants, where there is almost never a toilet seat!! What's up with that?

Vieux Port became the center of our tourists spots. We actually visited the port several times during our stay. There, we people watched, ate local cuisine, shopped for souvenirs, and took a cruise around the calanques. The air was fresh, the openness of the plaza was refreshing, and the atmosphere was relaxing. The street vendors who set up on the plaza each evening were quintessential French. Old Port is truly where Old France meets the new.
