The Old Port (Vieux Port) is the place to start your visit to Marseille. It's authentic, very much alive, contemporary, quaint and beautiful. From the Old Port, you have 3 wonderful choices, Le Panier, Notre Dame de la Garde, and the new Museum on the water. 1) Le Panier or The Basket, is the adjacent neighborhood to the north of the Old Port, rich in character, shops and restaurants. 2) Notre Dame de la Garde, which is a top a hill immediately to the south of the Old Port, is a rich, diverse cathedral with spectacular views of Marseille and the Med Sea. 3) The new museum (opens June 2013) is just east of the Old Port on the Med Sea, an incredible design and architectural wonder. Visiting all 4 is a half day or more.
