Owner description: Marseille's old port, once a great commercial center for boats arriving from Africa, has recently experienced a dramatic revitalization as a destination for cruise ships.

The Old Port (Vieux Port) is the place to start your visit to Marseille. It's authentic, very much alive, contemporary, quaint and beautiful. From the Old Port, you have 3 wonderful choices, Le Panier, Notre Dame de la Garde, and the new Museum on the water. 1) Le Panier or The Basket, is the adjacent neighborhood to the north of the Old Port, rich in character, shops and restaurants. 2) Notre Dame de la Garde, which is a top a hill immediately to the south of the Old Port, is a rich, diverse cathedral with spectacular views of Marseille and the Med Sea. 3) The new museum (opens June 2013) is just east of the Old Port on the Med Sea, an incredible design and architectural wonder. Visiting all 4 is a half day or more.

Worth a visit, as there are so many boats in the port! there are a number of day trips living from here. The walking area is massive, and you can easily walk around, getting from one fort to the other (though that would could take around 30mins). Plenty of cafes and restaurants as well.

It is a very nice port with different kinds of activities all around. I like watching the yachts and boats moving in and out of the port, people selling fresh fish and seafood near the harbor. It has a broad and nice of the city center of Marseilles. It is nice walking under the mirrored canopy, you could watch the movements of cars and people from another angles. It provided me good angles for photo shooting too. Only complaint is: the restaurants around the port charged very high for the drinks and food.
