“Pretty but very, very crowded and touristy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2013

The port itself is pretty and the new updates are lovely BUT it is SO crowded with SO many cars pouring out exhaust that choke and gag you. The restaurants are expensive and we saw lots of people sitting on the patios being subjected to street performers that were loud and annoying. One "band" was a group of young men who literally screamed and beat drums until all the people were forced to look at them (the people were trapped at their tables on the sidewalks trying to eat lunch) and then the men pulled people- physically pulled them- up from their tables and made them dance and stuff. The people were uncomfortable and tried to ignore them but they were SO loud and insistent. The waiters did not try to get them to stop. Go one or two blocks over to find a little cheaper restaurants without the sideshow act. The sea was lovely and there were lots of ferrys and boats to go out to the islands or for a lunch cruise or whatever. It's worth checking out for an hour or two for sure.

Lots of outdoor restaurants around the Port. Many times musicians come to play and entertain the people--very nice! The mirrored canopy is great, reflects the water and people. Very lively and fun!

“Has It All”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

This old port of Marseille has become a very busy and full small boat harbor on the edge of the main area of Marseille. There are many small and fine restaurants surrounding the harbor. Each morning the fishermen sell their fresh catches to the locals and the tourists at the head of the harbor. There are ferries and scheduled boats that can be taken to the famous islands just outside the harbor as well as to other villages up and down the coast. The scenic Le Petite Train travels from Vieux Port through the city to the famous Basilica on the mountaintop for 7 Euros each way. It is also adjacent to both the main downtown shopping area as well as an old and historic part of the city. All are within short waling distance.

If you are not fortunate enough to be residing in a hotel at Vieux Port, it is a "must see' and the heart of tourist activities and sights.

“Where it all happens!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

Vieux port is the heart and soul of Marseille. Do not miss the morning fresh fish market where the fisherman actually pull thier boats up to the dock and sell thier fresh fish! Along the port are numerous cafés to take dinner or a coffee.

Most all of the excursions (petit train, city tour, tour of les calangues, and château d'If) all sell tickets and depart from here.

Of course the main attraction is people watching. Marseille is filled with a diverse population from all over the world, and toursist from around the world.

One of the prettiest ports. Surrounded by many great restaurants. Always something going on. Would suggest doing a boat tour of the Calanques as well
