Owner description: Marseille's old port, once a great commercial center for boats arriving from Africa, has recently experienced a dramatic revitalization as a destination for cruise ships.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon and it seemed that visitors came out of the wood works. Many restaurants around the Old Port invited patrons to sit and people watch, a very French way of spending leisure time. With the weaher so cooperative it was a nice way to spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon.

We only stayed there long enough to enjoy a coffee in one of the numerous restaurants situated along the port and to embark on the ferry to the If castle. The area is a nice, sunny open space with lots of small boats and a few huge old ones.
Several monuments are located in the area:The entrance of the port is protected by one fortress on each side (fort St jean and fort St nicholas). And on one side of the port itself is located the main city hall, a 17th century building. The Basilique Notre Dame, a cathedrale situated on a hill on the other side of the port is also clearly visible from most of the port area.

There are many restaurants and cafes along the port. You can have lunch, coffee, dinner or just some wine here. When I visited here, it was a sunny day. The view here is quite good. Blue sky and sea. I saw many ppl having lunch, dessert, or coffee here. it's quite relaxing. A totally different life style with Asia.

Lots of good restaurants around the old port. Most excursions leave from there too. The boat to the Mont Christ island departs from there as welle as the one pulled by a tractor.
