Owner description: Marseille's old port, once a great commercial center for boats arriving from Africa, has recently experienced a dramatic revitalization as a destination for cruise ships.

There are many restaurants and cafes along the port. You can have lunch, coffee, dinner or just some wine here. When I visited here, it was a sunny day. The view here is quite good. Blue sky and sea. I saw many ppl having lunch, dessert, or coffee here. it's quite relaxing. A totally different life style with Asia.

Lots of good restaurants around the old port. Most excursions leave from there too. The boat to the Mont Christ island departs from there as welle as the one pulled by a tractor.

Sure ... there's dog excrement and litter, but no more (and possibly a bit less) than any other French city. Sure there are hawkers and beggars, but once again no more than anywhere else in France. The construction work at the Vieux Port is inconvenient but does not define Marseilles ... and it will be a fantastic space when it's done.
We (4 independently travelling ladies in our 50s) were there in early October, and loved it.... wandering the back streets of the Pannier; unexpectedly coming across the opening ceremony of the World Petanque Championships and cheering the Aussies as they marched in; taking the Petit Train; cheering with the very good natured Cypriot football fans as they made their way past our restaurant table, chanting, singing, waving and letting off flares; shopping for fruit in the local fresh food markets packed with locals; fantastic fresh seafood ... all contributed to a fun few days

Marseille will be the Capital City of European Culture in 2013, so the Old Port was undergoing some renovation when I visited. The Old Port is lovely, very safe and close to all the shops of downtown Marseille. There is a great coffee shop in front of the Old Port metro stop, too.

Due to a lot of renovations going on at the port, it is not very attractive, and noisy and it could be that way for a while. Hopefully by Spring ;it will be finished and should be more enjoyable around th Old Port
