man this place rocked. it had it all. very clean, neat, organized, had EVERYTHING in it. when they say its an apartment, they mean it. dishes, cups, soap, blankets, ipod ready clock. the windows have shutters which completely shut the light out. we had 2 rooms, one of them had a huge balcony which the opened up completely to the living room. i was really impressed with this. the parking deck was "across the street". you had to drive down the block to enter it and there is a pedestrian exit just across the hotel. however, this is not related to the hotel, but that town sucked! it closes early, looks sketchy north of the hotel.

The apartment hotel is pretty easy to find when arriving at the main train station Gare St Charles and is around a 15 minute walk, or can easily be reached by a journey on the metro and tram. It is easy walking distance to many of Marseille's main attractions and is well served by the nearby trams stops. There are a number of supermarkets nearby so it is easy to buy food to make in the kitchen. The apartment itself is very comfortable if a little bit on the small side. It was nice that it had a balcony and a lot of light came into the rooms. The beds were extremely comfortable, even the sofa bed was comfortable. The toilet was in a separate room which was convenient and there was loads of storage space which came in useful in the hallway. The kitchen was well equipped and didn't look like it was used very much. The amenities were very useful, the cleaning products for the kitchen, and enough of everything. We only had to ask for more toilet paper at reception. The best thing about the apartment was the soap and shower gel, very nice smelling and of very good quality, you could buy at reception if you wanted to. We were unsure if a high chair was available on booking but luckily it was there when we arrived, although was a bit difficult to figure out how it worked. That was the only downside, so if you don't travel with a baby then I could see no downsides to the apartment.

As a traveller we do not expect our hotel to be a palace and neither are we expecting to be treated like Shahs (Kings). We expect basic service and hope that everything goes smoothly.

We were there from 23 May till 2 June. When we made our booking (a month back) we had been charged immediately. We brought our confirmation print out just in case something happens.

The room
The room is modernly furnished which includes free WIFI as well. The refrigerator from Electrolux looks news but gives away an awkward noise throughout the night so much so that we had to shut it off so that we could sleep.
The beds are comfortable. Though the room is meant for two, there is a table with one chair and one stool. There isnt enough space in the cupboard to hang out that many clothes. Soap and dishwashing liquid as well as utensils and cutlery are provided, which we found to be nice.
There were some pictures on the wall hoever they were tainted with food when we checked in. Seems someone has forgotten to clean them

The Bathroom:
The bathtub is slippery even before a shower and there is nothing other that the bar to hang towels on which we could hang on too.

Cleaning
We booked the room for 10 nights, 7 and 3 nights separately. According to the "house rules" our room should be cleaned once in a week and for the short stay, to be cleaned daily because the cleaning price is included (i.e. higher per day rate).

The reality: On the fourth day we managed to get a set of towels. One the day before our check out date our room was "cleaned".
- New Towels
- Bathroom cleaned
- Beds made
- A plastic bag for rubbish was given

We felt shortchanged.

Service:
Though it was stated clearly in the hotel's "guidebook" that more information on restaurants (Italian) around the city can be obtained from the staff on duty when we asked for information the hotel staff looked lost. They said it could be here. Flipped through but cant find any. Then we were told to go through brochures that were left behind by restaurant owners.
Very helpful indeed???

Cleanliness:
As mentioned above we do not find the cleanliness up to standard. We do not go around fingering for dust because the dirt is noticeable, like pictures on the wall tainted with food.

The Towels. The towels have a very funny smell. Smells like aged vinegar.

Breakfast:
We didnt try it out since we do not know what they are offering for breakfast. There is no effort to inform us about it as well.

Staff:
During our stay it seems that they have a couple of trainees learning to do the job. On one occassion a trainee is being asked about what we have spoken in English and is to reply to us in Germany. This is not a training school. If they need to do role playing they should get it done internally. We find this as being unacceptable for a 4 Star Hotel.

Saturday 2 June 6.45 AM We were at the counter to check out. At 7.10 a.m we are still not checked out even though there are no other customers. The staff cannot find our reservation in the computer! We informed him that we needed to be at the train station at 7.30 otherweise we wil have to pay a couple of hundred Euros per person for the new train tickets. We gave him the print out which stated we have paid for the room in advance and we are aware we need to only pay for the taxes and one phone call (40 cents).

The staff managed to get the bill printed out with
1. double transaction on 31.05 even though we had only one room
2. a balance of 250 Euros that he alleged we need to pay.

Upon further clarification he corrected himself. We need to pay 958 Euros for the room which we have paid in advance and charged to our card and debited from the credit card account.

After much persuasion he said ok, we will get our boss to call you. Today is the 6th of June. There was neither a call nor an email. When we got back we called and spoked to booking.com
which handled the matter professionally. They said that the hotel staff was new. I began questioning why put two newbies on duty at the same time. There was no follow up from the hotel's end. We are currently monitoring our card for the next 55 days. If there is a problem, we would not hesitate to call the hotel. The last thing we want is a hotel that cant do its billing correctly.

We have been to many places in a few continents and so far we have not had a hotel with billing issue.

We have not sent our feedback to their A Club. Lets see what they say.

The rooms are weel equiped and well decorated.
The area is not very good. It's complicated to leave the car outside and the price of the parking is expensive.
Although the apartment is very well equipped the air conditioning of the hotel wasn't working and it was 35º outside during that weekend.
Our refrigerator wasn't working either. Also, if the apartment is for 4 persons, than it should have 4 chairs, right?
It was too expensive considering other hotels in France belonging to the same company with the same level of quality.

Booked in an emergency following a ferry strike the room was large and spacious.
The room appeared spotless but when I dropped my phone down the side of the sofa bed I discovered a few bits and pieces which I guess had fallen through the same gap without being noticed or worth the effort of recovering. The bed itself was fine for sleeping but the frame ridge made it impossible to sit on comfortably. Air conditioning wasn't greatly effective leading to several mosquito bites resulting from the open window. Breakfast was adequate but the choice was limited and I felt it expensive for what you got. There is a bakery just round the corner which provided a much better and cheaper alternative.
Overall there were no major faults and excellent public transport options close by. Whether its worth the money would depend on if you could get a cheap deal. At full price it was a bit lacking.

Don't stay here. The hotel has easy access to the old port and train station, but it is not in a very nice neighborhood nor does it hve great views. We stayed here for three nights at the beginning of a three week trip through France. I loved the apartment. We were lucky enough to get a huge balcony with our room, so we ate dinner and breakfast in our room. Lunch we had at the old port or in the Panier district. The beds are pull outs-so if you are very tall or have a bad back-this place isn't for you. The kitchen is well equiped, and there are plenty of nice grocery stops on the your way home from the tourist areas. I would stay here again, but if you only have one trip in your life to Marseille, stay at the Old Port.
