We went to l'Epuisette to celebrate my husband's birthday -- we hadn't been to other Michelin starred restaurants on this trip and we hadn't had a bouillabaisse since our last visit to Nice.

We went by taxi, an approximately 15 Euro ride from central Marseille. The driver had to drop us off nearby, as he couldn’t drive to the restaurant, which was literally on the shore and over the water. Our booking was for 7:30, and we opened the restaurant. As I had requested, we were seated at the window.

We both ordered bouillabaisse (at 60 Euros each) and a dessert. Our wine was good, but we twice had to request that it be poured. The bouillabaisse was good, the fish was then presented, boned, and returned -- it was good -- but NOT 120 Euros worth! And then, although I had notified them twice that it was a birthday celebration, they did nothing to mark it, unlike an experience that a fellow Trip Advisor member had.

When we were ready to leave, they asked if we wanted a taxi. When it arrived (also nearby), the meter read 9 Euros, a legitimate charge, as the driver had to come out from town.

We have always wanted to eat a classic bouillabaisse overlooking the port in Marseille, and recently enjoyed that experience. L'Epuisette combines the best in a classic dining experience in a modern venue in an incredible setting overlooking Chateau d'If.
The broth is presented first with the fish removed and served as the main course.
The wine list was top drawer and included perfect pairings for a 5 star, 3 hour luncheon experience that is not to be missed. The service was both amiable and precise. Certainly well worth the trip to Marseille just for the experience of dining here.

If you are interested in having an authentic bouillabaisse experience in a spectacular setting, this is your restaurant. The meal we had was absolutely perfect from start to finish. A lovely amuse bouche was presented, followed by an unexpected "starter", then the "main event" the bouillabaisse, in a two stage process. It is interestingly ritualisic with the fish broth, croustade and aioli presented first (and filling because it's so delicious), followed by the fish selection and more broth. The dessert was a real surprise, beautifully complex and bursting with complementary flavors. I also cannot say enough about how friendly, accomodating and welcoming everyone in the restaurant was. Finally, the view is unforgettable. You should know that this restaurant is a healthy walk from the vieux port so leave yourself plenty of time. It took us close to an hour at a relatively brisk pace to walk from the west side of the port to the restaurant. If you enjoy walking do it, we found it very pleasant.

I liked this restaurant. Not much on the outside and a bit of a trek down to it but inside it was very fresh and clean. 5 star quality dining. White table cloth and formal waiter service. Great to impress and enjoy. I had the bouillabaisse, excellent followed by a fantastic cheese plate. Great wine list. Great watching the sun go down as the boats came in. Only two small points of criticism, took ages at times to get service and for some reason completely unlike any other French restaurant it was hard to get bread. I would definitely go back.

I know little of bouillabaisse and had never had it in France. But visiting Marseille with my wife and reading so much about it there it became a must do and this restaurant became a must try based on so many glowing reviews. We walked and enjoyed finding the place down some steps from the main road. The little restaurant had such a wonderful view of the old fishing village which we saw transform from sunlight to sunset during our time. It gave a wonderful feeling. Neither of us love fish soup but we tried the famous bouillabaisse. It was good but not great-- and before you drop your jaws shouting heresy I remind you that we are not the typical bouillabaisse customers and were comparing it to food we love, not to other similar dishes. I wish we had ordered off the regular menu to try more things. And I'd definitely return. Other comments and descriptions about L'Epuisette are reliable.
