I stayed at this hotel only one night, and I have to admit I panicked a little when I realized that there was no elevator. I also held my breath a moment while unlocking my room's door, which had apparently been kicked open recently, to judge by its battered wooden frame. All my doubts melted away, however, as soon as I stepped into the lovely-smelling room with the golden warmth of a Marseille afternoon wafting through the open window and the neat, simple furnishings (including flat screen TV) inviting one to kick back and relax. Although situated right on the picturesque old port, the noise level stayed quite reasonable and at night the view across the port became even more glamorous, with the Notre-Dame de la Garde becoming a spectacular beacon. Just as charming as the room was the bar downstairs, with its terrace overlooking the port. I had cocktails here before dinner and a perfectly correct breakfast before checking out in the morning. The staff was quite nice, I thought. Just keep in mind, however, that this place isn't all that cheap. My one night's accommodation and breakfast ran $172. But in the end I thought it was well worth it.

Stayed at the Belle Vue with a friend for 2 nights in mid-September. We did not book this hotel originally but after one night in a not very pleasant hotel (see separate review for the St Louis) we changed to this far superior establishment. Curiously it is run by the same management, yet the two places could not be different. To be fair our room here was 50€ per night more, but definitely worth it. The Belle-Vue is on the port, only 5 minutes away from the metro and the Canebiere shops. Our room, no. 24, was on a corner but still has a view of the magnificent harbour. The road outside can be a bit noisy in the morning with the commuter traffic. The room was quite small but pleasant, light and CLEAN, adequate towels and good shower (no bath). Comfy beds and reasonable wardrobe space. When we arrived the previous evening, in a thunderstorm and seeking alternative accommodation, the receptionist was lovely, really helpful and friendly. The hotel has a bar next to reception on the first floor which gets quite lively in the evenings with a "young" crowd, but for us this was part of its charm. Good wine in a quieter corner overlooking the twinkling harbour. We did not have breakfast here (10€) as it was available for 6€ at a café close by and the waitress was not particularly friendly. She was the only negative thing about the Belle-Vue, which we would recommend.
