“Old, smelly, helpless”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2013

We were in Marseille overnight and looked for a place to stay in downtown with basic amenities. This hotel had some raving reviews and location right by the port, so we went for it. Oh. My. God. What a horrible mess! Maybe this was a one-off problem, and it was later fixed, but the bathroom and WC in our room smelled absolutely horrible. Seriously, we couldn't make ourselves enter it! When I asked for a room change, a reasonably nice staff member showed me to another room, and it had the same patently unbearable, toxic smell. And it wasn't just me, the staff member agreed it was very bad, but apparently they weren't able to do anything. Seriously, it's 2013 in the heart of Eruope, can you get your basic plumbing working? That, and the fact that this hotel promised "Internet throughout the premises", whilst in fact there was NO wi-fi reception on the 4th floor, kind of made this "the bottom of hell" list for us. Seriously, we paid 100 Euro for something basic, and we were treated like garbage. This thing should be closed down. They need City's sanitation department on their case. Stay away, people!

My lady and I stayed here overnight. We had a great experience from beginning to ending. We had a reservation but were comp'd to a bigger room for free. Asked the typical tourist questions like 'where to eat, what to see, how to get around' and got great responses. They even held our baggage after we checked out so we could sight-see even more.

The service was TOP-NOTCH. Everyone that worked the desk was SUPER helpful (most of the time they are multi-tasking but they would drop everything to help us).

The size of the rooms are generally super small but the view totally compensates for it (despite the construction and all).

This was probably the best hotel I stayed in during my nine-cities trip across Netherlands, Belgium and France. Request a room with a view! We were in a corner room, big windows, great view of Vieux-Port and sun shining in the room. The staff was helpful (the guy moreso than the girls). My only complaint was that the internet didn't work in my room. I had to go out into the stairway to get wifi working on my laptop. It might have been a problem with my computer, but it wasn't a problem anywhere else so I'm not sure. If you have problems walking up stairs request a room on the lowest floor because there are lots of stairs and no elevator (beautiful stairway though). The restaurant on the same floor as reception is great but not open for dinner so grab lunch if you can! Breakfast was good, served in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view! We got a corner room and it was amazing.

This is the most charming hotel I've ever stayed in in France. The room I stayed in had great high ceilings and huge windows opening on the port with a beautiful view of all of vieux port, the boats and the ocean. The bar should not be missed, it is one of the highlights of the hotel. They have great traditional local bar munches like stuffed fig leaves and tapenade. The night I was there they had some amazing north African musicians that played for hours. This hotel is a total gem.

If you want to have an extraordinary experience, choose this hotel, and ask for a room at the top floor, which is the fifth.. They only have two, so it may not be available. Some details about you that should be fulfilled. Your height, preferrably less than 165 cm, not having any fobias, being in good physical shape, and open to new experiences. Why? The rooms on top have excellent view, but ceiling height is only 160 cm at the windows, and window opening is only 30 cm high. Ceiling is much higher though closer to the door. The bathroom is excellent but occasionally smells of sewer. The hotel has no elevator, so you have to climb the stairs to the fifth floor. At night bring a flashlight to find the light switch. Do not bring big suitcases, the upper part of the stairs is very narrow, clinging to the staircase walls, and you have a wonderful view all the way down to the ground floor as you climb the last steps. Afraid of heights? Don't be. The hotel is otherwise very nice, with friendly staff, a lot of French atmosphere. In this respect the bar on the first floor is famous for its jazz performances, and the young people come here every night to drink and socialize. Breakfast is excellent and may be enjoyed at the terrace overlooking the grand old harbour. We liked our stay, having sunny, nice weather every day, making the room temperature under the roof a bit high. The room is exquipped with aircondition. It makes the air circulate, but cooling? Not very much. The room has also flat screen TV (suitable size) with only French programmes, like most French hotels. Room cleaning should have a special cadeau for excellent service.

NO ELEVATOR and you have to carry your luggage yourself.
Incredibly small size of rooms (11m² less than business hotel in Japan); ... and to have a other room you have to pay a maximum surcharge .. it's the usual SCAM of this hotel.
Difficulty for WiFi connexion (do not confuse the (better) connexion thru Bellevue reserved for bar, and the (bad) connexion reserved for the hotel

I stayed here for one night on business, My single room was on the top floor. There was no lift and it was a good climb!
Best Bar of any French hotel I have been in. Situated on the 1st floor with classic frech styling and brilliant view of the old port. The aged wooden surround actually added to the flavour of the place. Here's the bad bit... 8 euros a pint. Oh well.
Room was ok and clean.

I enjoyed my short stay here, my wife would have loved it. Try it for a short romantic break.
