Owner description: Built under Emperor Augustus in the 1st century AD, the Roman Theatre of Orange experienced a real rebirth in 2003, transporting visitors back to Imperial Rome. The new tour and the free audioguide in seven languages tell visitors about the shows and social life in the Provencal city during Roman times. In the new projection room, the film, with computer-generated images and reconstructions of shows, retraces the history of the Roman Theatre of Orange.

Worth the visit to get a sense of the history and life of Roman occupation of the area through the well composed audio guides but if you have been to the Colosseum in Rome, it pales more than a little. I imagine that as other reviewers have commented, a live theatre performance would be an impressive and worthwhile experience.

Best preserved Roman Theatre in Europe apparently as it still has its back wall. Impressive both inside and out. Although not a lot to see once you enter the auditorium and see that. Never-the-less, worth doing.

I have seen Greek and Roman ruins all over Europe but the Theatre Antique d'Orange is the most significant and exciting. The restoration is magnificent and the AV guide, 3D shows and accompanying graphics all add huge value to the historical understanding of Roman provincial life. It is a physically-great site to clamber over and round and provides great views of the town, Mont Ventoux and the surrounding countryside. If you are in Provence, this is a great attraction for adults and children alike.

Just sit in the Theatre and admire the wall. It will leave one speechless thinking about how it's been standing for 2000 years. Weathered time, storms, vandals and fires.
The audioguide is a great addition. The short 3D videos are kind of cheesy.
To see an opera performed here during the summer festival would be a lifetime experience.

Even a hardened historical site visitor such as myself occasionally visits somewhere and thinks "my god, this is incredible". For me, that often relates to the sheer age of a site, and for a 2000 year old Roman Theatre still to be intact - and often still in use as a theatre - is astonishing. There is a fair amount to see, and the audioguides - available in a number of languages - are informative, but the real impact of this site is simply to sit in the seating and absorb its immense scale. The ticket also given you access to the museum across the Road, which is ok though not exceptional.
