Owner description: Built under Emperor Augustus in the 1st century AD, the Roman Theatre of Orange experienced a real rebirth in 2003, transporting visitors back to Imperial Rome. The new tour and the free audioguide in seven languages tell visitors about the shows and social life in the Provencal city during Roman times. In the new projection room, the film, with computer-generated images and reconstructions of shows, retraces the history of the Roman Theatre of Orange.

2000 years old, 5 stories tall and still being used as a theatre to this day. From a photographic point of view, not much to really sink your teeth into, but historically, very significant. I can imagine that seeing a live performance there would be spellbinding.

This ruin is till used for performances. We visited in the afternoon and although it was fairly impressive to see it was only when we sat through the short video on the history of the theatre that it came alive. If visiting the video is an absolute must.

Don't bother with the little tourist train that takes you round Orange as there is nothing to see other than the Arc de triomphe . You'll be taken round the streets for 40 minutes looking at shops and offices.

We went to Orange specifically to see the theater. We were staying only 30 mins away. The theater was spectacular and the audio tour was very informative. It only cost 8 euro each to get in which included the audio tour.

We spent about 2 hours here wandering around. One tip, wear shorts. Also climbing up the steps with no hand rail is a bit daunting especially if scared of heights.

Also visit the little cat in the box office/gift shop.

Anyone visiting this part of France should see this - in a class of it own. And if you can get to a concert/gig/ opera, snatch at it!
