A super fish restaurant Expensive but very good quality fish.
Great ambiance and service. The fish is also of excellent and well cooked. They also have someone to park your car which in Summer can be usful as it can be difficult to park

We didn't want to have a big meal for lunch, so the chef suggested to prepare a small plate with fried scampi and calamare. Perfect in a very light batter. As main course we chose for the wild Loup de Mer. The cooked fish was prepared at our table and so fresh it did not need any sauce, just a bit of olive oïl and a sprinkle of sea salt. This was really one of the better fish meals we had.

A constantly recurring problem - where do you find a good, reasonably priced meal on New Year's Eve. We checked out some of our favourite restaurants and on recommendation by friends we ended up at Flibuste. We booked late - but were promised a nice table.

On arrival we were shown to our table - which was in the back near the entrance to the kitchen and the entrance to the restaurant - so we were somewhat disappointed. But, someone also has to have the tables that are not well located so we made the best out of it. The next small incident was that my chair was broken - not completely but warped so that the seating wasn't level. This was quickly corrected by exchanging with another table (so someone else got the warped chair later in the evening)

We had seen the menus the day before - so we were aware of the prices and the selection. Like everywhere else on the Côte d'Azur - a lot more expensive than usual, so our expectations were high. We started with a glass of champagne - I don't know which brand - but excellent (Eur 15). Afterwards we were served an amuse bouche which was very salty.

For starters we could choose between oysters ( Eur 20), A plate with Foie Gras and a Foie Gras & fig macaroon (Eur 24), Caviar (Eur 25 for 5gr) or a plate called "Terre & Mer Fusion" (Eur 28). My partner tried the Foie Gras and said it was the most salty he had ever tasted. I chose the Fusion plate and had a mix of small "delights" - a big prawn, a scallop, about a 1/4 of a wild mushroom and fried sweetbread. Lots of good things, but a really strange mix topped with too much dressing.

For the main course we had a choice between leg of wild young boar (Eur 40), catch of the day and lobster (Eur 55). My partner had the boar and was really disappointed saying it tasted like ordinary meat in gravy (with very few vegetables). My lobster was really good and so was the truffle sauce it was swimming in.

Dessert was a choice between a composition of chocolate or mandarin desserts (both Eur 15). I opted for the mandarin which was a mix of parfait, pannacotta and what was supposed to be mandarin flavoured ice shavings. The first 2 were excellent - the last was totally without any flavour.

The wine list was the standard one for the restaurant - small but OK. We decided on the Sancerre (Eur 48). I would have preferred a separate wine menu to go with the food - or the possibility of buying wine by the glass to go with the different courses - but that was not an option.

The service was mostly good. It's always a busy night on NYE. Everyone arrives at the same time and everyone wants to be finished by midnight. The waiters were running about - but all in all, I think they managed quite well.

It's difficult to rate the restaurant - the table was not a good one, some of the food was really good - some not at all, the service was OK. All in all, It was an expensive evening out - and we felt that we could have gotten better value for money at one of our regular restaurants. I will give it 3/5 - my partner lower our friends probably higher.

Everything about Repaire de la Flibuste is perfect. The food is amazing, the service is attentive but not intrusive and the waiters go out of their way to explain exactly what you're getting to eat. The setting is gorgeous, right in the marina. Can't rate it highly enough and will definitely go back when we're next in Villeneuve Loubet.
