So, we've decided to go back to Monaco for the Grand Prix. Got tickets and need somewhere to stay. There's lots of apartments available within 10km but the price ranged from extortionate to galactic! Nice didn't really appeal to us, big city and very busy. We went "en famille" with our 8yo son and the bright lights of one of France's biggest cities didn't seem appropriate. Hotel Saint Michel pops up in a search and after an informative email exchange with Helene - we book. On arriving at Hotel Saint Michel the calm and friendly environment seemed a world away from Nice airport and the hustle and bustle of the city - we could have been on another planet! Helena greeted us with a smile and showed us to our accommodation. We opted for one of the apartments comprising sitting room with wall mounted fold away beds, double bedroom with a bed so huge, Charlie Buckets family could have all lived there and not seen each other, bathroom with bath and separate shower, separate toilet, kitchenette area with sink, fridge, hob and microwave. Sliding doors lead to a huge balcony with views across the hills towards Monaco. Beautiful! The apartment was tastefully furnished and immaculately presented. Downstairs, the bar and lounge are nicely furnished with armchairs that make you feel like you've stumbled into a giants house! Outside there's a nice terrace with fantastic pool with a proper deep end for jumping in and splashing everyone within 30 feet. (Which we didn't do because that would be rude!). There's a nice wooded area opposite the hotel with benches and tables for picnics and a path that leads down to the town of Beaulieu (not for the feint hearted - very steep and rocky). However, the view is spectacular overlooking Cap Ferrat and across to Nice. There's a bus stop very close and the bus takes you down to Beaulieu where there's everything else you need or want. Supermarkets, bars, restaurants and a station that goes to Monaco and Nice in the other direction. Bus is €1.50 and a return train ticket to Monaco is €5 - listen up UK, if you want the public to use the transport network, make it affordable! Our hosts at the hotel, Helene and Marc were wonderful! Charming interesting people who are there to help but discreet. Our only gripe - we didn't stay long enough! We plan to return later in the year and are busy trying to rearrange holidays to make it happen. TIP - if you have to use a taxi from Nice, get a quote/estimate from the driver by all means, but tell them you'll pay the estimate/quote or the metered fare, whichever is the SMALLEST. Our taxi driver should have worn a mask and striped jersey. Told us the fare would be about €55 but when we arrived the meter said €37 - until a quick couple of finger presses and hey presto €59! Bandit! Do not let this put you off Hotel Saint Michel. Perfect for a long weekend or extended holiday.
