Owner description: For over 400 years, the Citadel rings the city. Element of the defence of the port the most important between Antibes and Toulon for centuries, it is now one of the few monuments of this magnitude of the Var coast. Proud of its rich maritime past, Saint-Tropez has decided to create a modern museum in the dungeon of the town's citadel, allowing all visitors to discover the daily lives of men and women who shaped over the centuries the Saint-Tropez of today.

From what we saw, not many visitors to St. Tropez climb the steps to the old fort. That's a shame, because it is impressive--under reconstruction during our July 2012 visit--and one of the quietest places in town to see the port. For photographers, it probably does offer the best vantage point close to the town to get lovely shots of the harbor. There aren't many displays to see, but its lack of touristy-ness was a great positive for us.

The citadel of St Tropez is a hidden pleasure that many people miss out on their trip to the town. It's situated on a hill (the path up can be somewhat tricky if you wear flip-flops) that you climb up to before reaching the entrance, where you pay a small fee (Eur3) to get into the castle. Once in, you're free to roam around the grounds and enjoy the stunning views from the battlements across St. Tropez bay to Ste Maxime up as far as the Esterel. It's truly a wonderful view. There are cannons and other bits and pieces to examine, but the best thing about this visit is the views that you get to form a different perspective of St. Tropez.

Of course you have to visit St Tropez and see the multi-Million Pound yachts. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of this very popular seaside town. Definitely a must see!!

Nice citadel but under renovation 2012. My boy has always loved it, but this time he was under impressed until I found a peacock sitting in a tree.
