“Great place to relax, stunning views”
Reviewed October 25, 2010

This hotel is really special; I felt like I had been invited into a private villa. The property is comprised of two villas and I had specifically booked the smaller one for it is right on the sea front. A choice I did not regret for we had magical views from our room and from the terraces. We had planed to visit Saint Tropez and Cannes but we only had 2 nights and decided that the hotel’s surroundings and activities would make for a more relaxing stay. I would definitely recommend taking the free kayaks out and paddling to a quite alcove to sunbathe as we did, the water was perfectly calm and the coastline is great to explore. The second day we just enjoyed the hotel’s infinity pool and hot tub, I booked a massage and we ate at the hotel’s restaurant where our table was right on the sea front. The food was very good, lots of fresh fish, though on the expensive side. It was hard the next day to pack our bags and face up to the reality that all this was not home but a hotel.

The Villa Mauresque is not a proper hotel but a private set up of two villas, one on the sea front, the other at the back, each of them offering no more than 6 or 7 rooms.

Make sure you do not book the back villa (Villa Le Palais): it is VERY noisy due to the Corniche road that passes right behing the rooms. We stayed there the first night and were about to cancel the whole 8 day stay.
It is much cheaper than the sea front villa (Villa Les Jardins) but a true robbery as you feel like staying by a motorway.

The sea front villa is another story- just about perfect. Clearly another range. Very quiet, makes you feel like home. We stayed in the Miller room (each room is named after a famous writer) which was exquisite in terms of comfort, style and view.

Relaxed service - don't expect a 5 star hotel service, it is not a hotel: no restaurant (whenever you decide to have breakfast, lunch or dinner at the villa, in the garden, by the pool or inside, you have to mention it first so that the cook prepares it for you).

Kept aside from the crowdy-noisy-lousy Saint Raphael center, the beaches nearby are a little disappointing as for bothe the crowd and the sand. Keep in mind that Villa Mauresque's boating facilities are more for teenagers than sportive adults (myu husband was a bit disappointed to find out that the promised caramaran boat was actually a kid's plastic one rather a proper adult one like a hobby cat etc..). The Centre Nautique is about 2km away.

In terms of restaurants nearby, we much enjoyed La Tortue, right on the beach, at a walkable distance from the hotel, and a couple of little places set on the beach.

Last but not least, Villa Mauresque staff (mostly young German speaking beginners waitresses, very gentle and trying hard and the supervisor Sylvain) were adorable.

My fiancée and I spent a dream weekend at this amazing secret hideaway... We went for our pre wedding "relaxing weekend" as we were getting stressed out, and if you need a place to relax and chill out, this is it! The view is incredible, the room was huge and well decorated, and best of all is the sea-front jacuzzi where you can drink a glass of champagne overlooking the sea and the palm trees and listen to the birds sing! Absolute heaven! Not to mention the chef Philip who is a magician, he made a dish specially for us (we asked in advance) - shrimps as entrée then lobster with the most incredible sauce... I drool when i remember it...This is a magical corner of the earth, don't change it please

where do I start? From being dropped by the cab (from St Raphael-20euros) in the driveway along the main street, because the gates locked and you have to ring a bell. To the villa I had was which was very small, not what I had envisioned as a luxe hotel, no TV in the room....then when we went to lay at the pool (which is shown as an infinty pool online) we were told that pool is for the owners and we had to use the pool tucked away in back, no infinity view, no breeze, no staff to bring you a drink.....the breakfast, although tasty and served by the water is 23 euro per person...if you want to go into St Raphael, be prepared to take a 20euro cab fare one way, or take the train from Bouloris station...staff is young and tried to be as helpful as they knew how, but seem to have no luxury hotel experience. I left a day early because I couldnt take it, and they made no effort to refund any $$ or credit me for the breakfast or anything, no apology for my unhappiness of expecting something much more from the website....never again! stay in St Raphael hotel Beau Sejour or Excelsior are good for the value!

Dear Guest,

We thank you for your feedback!
We have listened to the positive and the negative feedback which are both very important to us , and have tried to improve matters wherever possible, reopening in March 2010 with:
- new management , staff and cleaners. We remain a family-run boutique hotel with the aim of making you feel as if you are 'chez vous' in an exclusive private villa and not a classic 5 star hotel (which we are not and don't pretend to be, we are a chambre d'hote, though some websites decide how to class us according to their own judgement)
- cheaper breakfast at 1 9 Euros rather than 23E , and you can still have it wherever you wish, bedroom or seafront or terrace.
- new clearer names for each of the two separate hotels - they share the same grounds but have separate pools and external jacuzzis- (Les Jardins becomes Boutique Hotel Riviera and le Palais becomes Spa Hotel Riviera due to its seafront jacuzzi and gym )
- Spa hotel Riviera now has a new external jacuzzi/spa overlooking the sea, similar to that in the other villa as well as an external gym with sea views . Please note that le Palais/Spa hotel Riviera has its own pool but no seaview from it, the sea view is seen from some rooms and the garden which leads right to the seafront. The Infinity pool is in the Boutique hotel Riviera,so if you would like to use that one please choose a room in that particular villa. Please also note that both villas/hotels are separate, so your pool and your external jacuzzi is in the grounds of the villa where you booked your room.
- the villas have been repainted inside and outside this winter (February 2010) with Farrow and Ball painting and some rooms redecorated
- as of May 2010 there'll be TVs in all rooms
- there is a minibar in the suites but no telephone in the rooms, the minibar for other rooms is in the common area on an 'honesty bar' system (help yourself and note it down) though all rooms now have coffee and tea facilities
- the only two rooms that have occasional traffic noise at night are in le Palais/Spa hotel Riviera as the famous 'route de la corniche' goes past behind this villa, we are putting in double glazing this coming winter and we can only forewarn those who book through us as other websites don't mention it. Note that these rooms have been priced accordinglyl
Voila! I hope this will please our returning guests and that it will help make your stay an unforgettable and enjoyable one!

Villa Mauresque is an absolutely gorgeous and spa-like inn. The location on the water is serene and idyllic, but the town of St. Raphael is gritty, over developed and a long walk from the hotel. If you seek good restaurants, shopping and quaint French towns, Villa Mauresque is not a great choice. If you plan to stay onsite for your whole stay, it is a great option. The room (Kandesky) was spacious and well appointed, the pool and grounds are well manicured, and the view of the sea is breath-taking. Breakfast from the restaurant was very good but overpriced, but there is complimentary coffee/tea available all day and the staff was friendly and responsive.

This is a beautiful and quiet spot and it feels like you in a very exclusive house party. The building is listed and sort of cod-Moorish set in pretty grounds which slope to the sea. The rooms are very varied - sea view obviously better but dearer. There is a communal mini-bar and tv but neither en suite. There are six rooms in the front villa and ten in the rear and go fro teh front - seaside one - every time.

The swimming pool and jacuzzi are great and well-located and the garden furniture - wicker and conventional is well-placed and comfortable. It all sparkles.

You can have meals - ordered in advance - anywhere in the grounds (though the mistral inhibits this somewhat!)

My only gripe is the extortionate and not very interesting breakfast. Again, lovely location but 23 euros a head and really nothing special. However there is ad libitum tea and coffee so it's perfectly possible to slope off to the nearby boulangerie and return to eat your croissants with the fab view.

Staff are charming though not very hotelly and efficient. The owners family - a glamorous, multi-national bunch, were in residence when we were and keen to give guests a good experience - so maybe the breakfast will have improved/got less expensive by the time you read this.
