“Liked Villa St. Maxime...”
Reviewed November 4, 2007

We visited Villa St. Maxime in late Sept. We found the Villa to be bright, airy, modern and very clean. Upon arrival we were greeted with a (very welcome) glass of wine and sat on the terrace admiring the view down to the Med, and up the hill to St. Paul. The villa was full so there was no chance of upgrading from our garden view room... room was fine, but we'd recommend trying for a Sea View room.

Morning breakfast was served on the terrace - croissants etc, juices, yogurt, eggs (any way), fruit, etc... very nice. If you are back in the late afternoon, 'happy hour' brings guests together on the terrace to swap stories etc over complementary glasses of wine etc. Later on, when you get back from dinner, you will find a trolley just inside the door with wonderful chocolates and 'nightcap' material!

The Villa is a 15-20 minute walk (uphill) from St. Paul. WELL worth exploring... especially before noon (when the hoards arrive by the busload) or after 5pm (when they've left). There are restaurants nearby - John or Anne will be able to recommend something for you.

We didn't take advantage of the pool - but other guests who did found it to be wonderful.

Since our trip would take us to Paris, we decided not to spend any time in Nice (yes, we did see/drive past the port and along the Promenade des Anglais). Aside from visiting St. Paul, we took two day trips - one to the East (Monte Carlo, Tourbie, Eze, Villefranche Sur Mer) and another whole day in Antibes... both wonderful... but, be warned, a rental car WITH a GPS is highly recommended!

There is a reason Villa St. Maxime has all wonderful reviews- they know how to treat their guests and have lovely accommodations.
I can't say enough good things about our time in St. Paul de Vence. It is a really neat area and Villa St. Maxime is the perfect home base.
Lots of special touches like the video library, a cart with chocolates and liquers when you come in at night, happy hour, and amazing breakfast (try the poached eggs!)
I recommend having a rental car.

My husband and I and 10 others (friends and relatives) celebrated our special anniversary at Villa St. Maxime. We occupied the entire villa and it was truly our home away from home for the entire week.

I worked with the wonderful owners, Ann and John, for almost a year (via E-mail) in planning our activities, and the vacation ended up being more perfect than we could ever have dreamed.

Ann found a dear, talented, retired chef ( we just let him choose the menu ) for our fabulous welcome dinner, made many of our dinner reservations based on her own recommendations, and arranged for the most incredibly helpful young drivers to take us on our jaunts throughout the countryside. Because we were there at the height of the season, we used two small vans to get in and out of the tiny villages more easily, and Rudolph and Ivan had great suggestions for lunches (a picnic on an island off of Cannes just for us on our last day), arranged golf one day for several, and shared their knowledge of the countryside at every opportunity.

Everything everyone has written about the villa itself is right on- it is beautiful, immaculate, and very comfortable, and the staff(Francoise and Laurette) are like family. Being so close to St Paul is also great ! We walked up there for one reason or another almost every day.

We feel lucky indeed to have found such a special place to celebrate our anniversary.

Perfectly situated within easy walking distance of the art galleries and restaraunts in St Paul de Vence, this beautiful villa with olympic size (well, almost) swimming pool and sensational views of the rolling French countryside is truly a home from home. Not because of it’s spacious well decorated public areas with their fine artwork; or it’s clean, well appointed bedrooms with fabulous showers; but because of the owner’s style.

John and Anne, having come from America 20 years ago to open the villa, have a very welcoming approach. If you want a drink in the day whilst lazing by the pool, help yourself to the fridge and fill in the ‘honesty bar’ list. Whilst they don’t serve lunch, you are welcome to bring in a sandwich from the village and use their cutlery. It just feels homely.

Another nice touch is free cocktails for the guests around six o’clock. Why, because everyone in the property comes out on the terrace for a social chat before they go their separate ways for dinner, so you meet all the other residents in a relaxing and informal environment. John is a true host, especially watching him open champagne with a sabre (a villa tradition).

We certainly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return.

Villa St Maxime is located a pleasant five minute walk from the the walled town of St Paul De Vence. The views from the pool and veranda down to the coast overland are fabulous and the perfect setting for breakfast and lunch. We stayed in The St Maxime Suite which we would recommend for it's space and fabulous bathroom but also saw other rooms and they are of a high standard. The villa is bright airy and well airconditioned. It has beeen decorated tastefully and contemporarily and is extremally comfortable. The champagne breakfast is wonderful, and runs from 9 till 12 which is very civilsed! We enjoyed the complementary 'aperitivo' before going out and the drinks trolley on returning home at night. The whole place is spotless. The pool is great and has enough beds and umbrellas for every guest so there is no need to worry that you won't get a spot, you just might not get the spot you wanted! We found that after two days we were completely relaxed as the service seems designed around what you'd like rather than what the hotel wants to provide i.e.: an honour bar when John and Ann aren't around.

Tips! Lunch is not provided at Villa St Maxime but there is a fridge in your room and they are happy for you to use cutlery, etc from the kitchen. Unless you have a late breakfast you may find that if you haven't bought some bits to eat at lunch it's a hike into town for lunch, not ideal if you're having a lazy day!

Have evening drinks at the Cafe de la Place and watch the boules. The garcon was so kind to us and taught us the rules (our french is poor, he has no english but he got through eventually!) and lent us his boules if you'd like to join in! We ate at the Colombe D'Or, famous for it's art collection. It's worth a visit, food was excellent and the art was definately worth a look but the service there was beyond terrible, we came to the conclusion that most of the waiters standing around were in fact guarding the art! An experience though. Book in advance. We found the nicest service, food, ambience combined was at Le Tilleul (Also called Le Tilleul Menthe) at Place Du Tilleul.

Day trips worth doing: Monte Carlo, Mougins, Eze and The Trophy of the Alps. I'd avoid Nice and Cannes, we found them to be quite dissappointing, standard seaside resorts with designer shops and bad service and traffic!

Overall we'd some back and I'd stay no where else other than Villa St Maxime. It is very special and very relaxing.

  • Liked — Views, service, air of relaxation and tranquility
  • Disliked — Nothing really to dislike, lack of lunch provision if I was picky!!

This hotel is perfect(really). Beautiful, pristine, relaxing bedrooms with large comfy beds, superb bathrooms and fantastic views down to the sea from your balcony. Each room has its own special features and you won't be disappointed with any of them. You can even chill your own wine in the fridge if you wish and stay in with a DVD from their selection after an early dinner! I especially liked the quirky little touches, such as blue door handles, coat hooks, stylish bathroom accessories etc. It has real personal style and is decorated with flair. Wonderful modern art mixed with antique furniture and fresh flowers everywhere - this place has an eclectic, homely and spacious feel and is a lot more impressive than it looks on the website. Even more enthralling, is the welcome by your lovely hosts, Anne and John, who will join in pleasant conversation with you over a drink before you go out to dinner. Both relaxing and uplifting - nothing was too much trouble and they made all of our restaurant bookings for us(and a doctor's appnt), so we didnt have to think about a thing! And don't forget to open the champagne with a sabre whilst you're there - it's a speciality of the hotel and good fun!
